Well, today was definitely a day from hell at work. I had to do something that required I use 2 different programs - one to build the product (it includes database files and icons, among other things) and the other to take the product and put it into the form for our customer to use. So these programs talk to each other. The second one is fairly new, developed in house, and still a little buggy. The older program is one I use sporadically, so it’s understandable that I might forget some things.
I was having problems - I’d do the conversion, then check the output, only to discover that while the databases transferred, the symbology didn’t, entirely. All of the files were there, but the viewer program wasn’t seeing them. I was asking Dave a few things, since he’s been there forever, and we did a test - I forwarded the original file to him, and he did the conversion. And it worked for him. Perfectly. grrrrrr
Naturally, first thought is that I’ve got a problem with my machine. Easy to determine - I went to another terminal, logged on, and got the same crap. That tells me, it’s not my machine, it’s my network profile. So I email the responsible computer geek who tried to tell me it was some setting I had wrong. OK, how could my wrong settings be on two separate machines?? It didn’t make sense.
About 5 minutes before my quit time, one of the team of geeks (said lovingly - they’re really great guys) came to watch exactly what I was doing. Then he tried a few things, and it still wasn’t working. Then he asked me to put my original work on the common drive so he could mess with it. I did, but I reminded him that when I did that for Dave, everything worked fine. I repeated my suspicion of my profile, then told him it was past my quitting time, and I left.
The plan for tomorrow (barring the geeks figgering it out tonight) is for me to check and double check the original file to ensure it’s complete and correct. Then I’ll put it on a drive that Dave can access, and he’ll do the conversion for me. That works out anyway, because I need him to do QA on the product - this way he’ll be familiar with it.
Still, grrrrr! I fought with that stupid thing for the better part of 5 hours, and didn’t accomplish a thing today. Plus I missed 2 calls from my sweetie. And come to think of it, he hasn’t called to tell me he’s on his way home - hope he’s not still at the office - it’s an hour past quitting time for him.
And it’s time to feed the critters, so off to the kitchen with me. You didn’t have to read this whole post - I just needed to bitch a bit.
<sigh>
