A Game of Thrones (HBO series) [SPOILERS]

Here’s the latest teaser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ5p18wIQEI). Is anybody else eagerly awaiting this? I’m like a little kid before christmas. I have to buy a tv and get HBO first, but it’ll be worth it.

I’m not a big fan of some of the changes in the plot that they’re making, but it looks great and I like pretty much all of the casting choices. The only thing that could make me more excited is when George announces he’s done (I’m optimistic about this, if you follow his blog.)

For the past 2 years, my wife has signed up for HBO when “True Blood” season started and canceled it when “True Blood” season ended (this past year just as I was getting into “Boardwalk Empire.” )

I told her she’s got to sign up early this year for “A Game of Thrones.” She said she’d think about it.

I have high hopes. She usually gives me what I want (like that iPad on our recently anniversay, hoozah!!!)

Yeah, our household is going a bit loony tunes over this one. After the 12-minute trailer came out, we started reading comments on the blogs, looking at stills on random sites where the captions were in Spanish…

When does it start?

Tell those of us who don’t know anything about the source material a little about it.

HBO series are generally awesome so I know that I’ll at least give it a chance.

I will cancel my HBO subscription prior to the start of this series.

This is not due to a lack of interest in the story or in HBO.

This is due to a lack of George R. R. Martin’s interest in his fans.

April 17th.

I’m not sure what to make of the trailer - there were a lot of characters that flashed by that I had no idea who they were supposed to be. And wasn’t Robert supposed to be an attractive guy (if getting fat) with jet black hair and still in his 30s?

I think it’s impossible, in a visual medium, to be faithful to the books in terms of ages of characters. You just can’t depict kids getting married at 12 without alienating most of your audience. And once you age them, you have to age everyone else.

I can live with it.

Which ones? I though Ned, Jamie, Tyrion, Jon, Robert, and Littlefinger were obvious. Cersei and Catelyn were there too.

I don’t think Robert is supposed to be attractive. I think his appeal when he was younger was due to his rocking body and cockiness, not being pretty. I’m bothered by the black hair though, it being a plot point and all.

For a synopsis: LOTR with less magic and more backstabbing.

Feel free to elaborate (perhaps you did in an earlier thread).

Basically the next book should out any minute.

Since 2005.

I don’t get how delaying a book is a lack of interest in fans. On the positive side it means he won’t release a bad book just to make some cash. The guy could be burned out and needs a long break.

Well, I’ll probably sign up with HBO just to see this series.

If I’d started reading the books from the beginning, I might be miffed at the delays. As it is, I read them all last year & knew the situation. From his blog, GRRM seems to care about his fans. I just wish he’d done an outline for such a huge project!

From what I’ve observed, it seems to be a combination of: (1) GRRM gets bored and wants to move on to new ideas he’s had, and (2) fantasy football.

The last book that was written was supposedly the first half of a giant book that could not be published that way. He modified it to stand alone and the second part was supposed to be out in 6 months. In 2005. He has done other things since so his fans despair that he may never finish. Especially because he never looks healthy. I don’t know about his blog. I just read his last entry on his website and it said he was sick of being asked the question and he would update as soon as the next book was ready. That was in 2005 also.

Yeah, but his long break included 3 or 4 novellas
edited 4 or 5 “Wild Card” books
edited 2 other anthologies
and has done numerous long speaking tours

Yeah, I am not thinking he was burned out, I think he is just shameless milking speaking fees, knowing that angry fans are gonna show up simply to find out when the next book is gonna come out. If you have any kinda of fantasy/sci-fi convention or show, you are garunteed a crowd if you pay the speaker fee for Mr. Martin

IIRC, he pretty much had to scrap and re-write all that material, in order to fix some plot threads.

Writing is tough, as this rather informative blog article points out:

I’m really excited, though I haven’t read about the plot changes so can’t comment one way or another. I hope Bronn is still in it. Complaining about Robert having grey hair seems kind of silly - the whole plot point related to that doesn’t rest on what his hair color is NOW. It’s about what it used to be.

I can’t agree with you on the casting. Most of it has been pretty inspired except for…

Cersei Lannister. I’m sorry, but Lena Headey just isn’t a great beauty. Not even close. I know they wanted a nerd-friendly actress and that’s why she’s there, but Cersei is supposed to be a Helen-like beauty.

Catelyn Tully. I thought the original was perfect. A beautiful woman who looks good even though she’s past her prime. The kind of woman Littlefinger could spend his whole life obsessing over. I think the replacement is just a big blah. The new actress should be a background Londoner in the next Sherlock Holmes, not someone who is supposed to be quite a looker.

As for GRRM, I think he’s given up. He can’t possibly write anything that will come anywhere near the promise of the series so he’s not going to try. He explicitly wrote this series to get in on the Robert Jordan Milking The Epic Series Express and now he’s realizing that it’s not as easy as he thought. Better to leave it as an “awesome unfinished work” than “The Dark Tower Series*”.

*Not having read it, but from the reactions I’ve seen they seem to be along the lines of “Jesus, I wish King had just left it open-ended”.

You know, I’ve been pretty burnt out on the series, too. A re-read or two has allowed me to see that the books aren’t that great. But goddamn, if seeing this promo and others before it don’t have me bouncing in my chair counting down the days till April.

So I’m hoping that GRRM being on set, seeing his world come to life around him, will get the same shot in the arm and find the inspiration to finish the series.

Also, hearing “STOP THIS MADNESS IN THE NAME OF YOUR KING” at 0:40 in the promo makes me really excited to see the Hound in the flesh. He and Littlefinger are my two favorite characters, and I have no doubt whatever that Aidan Gillen is going to rock the face off Littlefinger, but I’m dying to see a clip of Rory McCann in that hound’s helm so I can breathe easier.

Robert’s only supposed to be ~35. He’s lived a lot, but his hair should still be black. It’s not that he has gray either, his hair is brown.

Eh, Lena Heady is pretty hot. Not smoking, tongue on the floor hot, but she’s a looker. I don’t know how her acting is, but what smoking hot babes are good actors? I can’t think of any. I’ll trade talent for looks any day.

Littlefinger obsesses because he was some shit-nobody growing up and Cat was the lord’s daughter, not because she was so gorgeous. I imagine she was less of a bitch before spending 15 years thinking her husband cheated on her and had her whole family murdered too.
