A girl's Hymen-How do you know........

You can see pictures of girls crotches on the internet? :smack: Why do I spend so much time here then?

Suppose a girl is a virgin, but old enough to go for routine OB/GYN exams for cervical cancer exams, papst (sp?) smear tests, etc… How can they do these things without breaking the hymen, or does the doctor break it? - Jinx

Oh, the things that keep me up at night!

When mine broke it didn’t hurt at all, but there was an awful gush of chunky blood–may have been some “flesh” there, I didn’t really examine it.

On the extreme end of the spectrum, I had to have my hymen removed by a doctor - there was only a pinhole in it, and it wouldn’t stretch. Pelvic exams were impossible, the doc couldn’t even get a pedeatric speculum in. The operation was quick, done under local aneasthetic, but it did involve a fair amount of bleeding. If the doctor (who was a real jerk) hadn’t messed around for nearly an hour afterwards, I would have gotten home before the lidocaine wore off. As it was, only some minor pain while driving home.

My point being - if your friend has some genuine concern about her ability to be penetrated (i.e. she’s played with it herself and been unable to penetrate) then she should see a doctor and consider getting her hymen removed surgically.

It’s ususally not much of an issue because:

  1. Cervical cancer is virtually unknown without exposure to (if not necessarily infection with) human papilloma virus, otherwise known as genital warts. Women who have not had sexual intercourse with a male have very, very low cervical cancer rates. This makes pap smears on virgins somewhat unecessary. Many (but not all) other reasons for pelvics are also sex-related.

  2. Hymens tend to stretch and/or atrophy with age. Past the age of eighteen, the vast majority of women can have a pelvic done without tearing the residual hymen.

  3. The number of women who are (a) older virgins, (b) still have an intact hymen, (c) concerned about protecting their hymen, and also (c) sufficiently sexually aware/comfortable to go get pelvics done is probably very small. I imagine doctors would deal with these individuals on a case-by-case basis.

And then of course she can always take a trip to Egypt and have it stitched back…

Thanks for this. I always thought your hymen broke either before or during the first time you had sex. Now I realise that mine broke after the first time, but we didn’t realise at the time. I bled a bit, but it didn’t hurt. But on the bad side, my boyfriend didn’t have sex with me again.
