Just got a scanner, scanned a few photos, they take up WAY too much of my hard drive.
Can someone recommend a hosting site?
I know virtually nothing about them, what makes a good or bad one, differences in quality, access, fees, etc. so you can’t overexplain this stuff to me.
I like Webshots. They limit how many photos you can put up, but I don’t think they limit the size of the photos, which is unusual. So you can put up hi-rez ones with no penalty. And they don’t make your viewers register to see the photos, which drives me nuts.
They have different levels of service based on your needs. Once you’ve uploaded your pics, that give you the “public url” you can use to share at no cost.
Just tried Villahe, and got told (after free registration) that the first photo I wanted to upload was too big. Also that I wold be limited to 25 phtos.
Not quite what I had in mind.
I’ll try some others.
Has anyone used several of these sites, and have comparisons? Or maybe a link to a site that rates such sites?
Another thing to consider is how big the files really need to be. If your intent is simply to post photos to the Internet for visitors to view (but not necessarily print or use in any way), you can scan them or edit them so that the file size is relatively small–no more than 100 dpi, no larger than 800 by 600 pixels (480x360 is even large enough for this purpose), and saved in JPEG/JPG format. Webshots is perfect for this.
If you are planning to archive photos, but don’t necessarily want them to be available to others, it would be worth getting a CD-RW drive and burning them to CD, or a DVD-/+R drive, and burning them to a DVD. This would allow you to save photo quality pictures (high res) without taking up too much hard drive space.
One option if you’re just wanting to put a photo up show it to a bunch of people or link it to a message board, or whatever, is www.paintedover.com. It’s completely free, completely unregulated as far as numbers or sizes allowed. One downside is that anyone can see or link to or use your photos.
