Think it’ll work?
It might work…the thread mentions that things can get wonky if Guest users are allowed to post, but that’s not a problem here.
However, the board coding people are (or used to be) famously reluctant to hack the source. Besides which, that is one nasty query. It’d be amazing if it worked, though.
I don’t knwo how hacked or modded the Straight Dope implementation of vBulletin is, but I run it myself, and it’s not that fragile. Just save backups of the PHP source and MySQL database, make the changes, and test it out. If it doesn’t work, restore.
The slowdowns, from my observation, don’t seem predictable – one minute the boards are running just fine, and the next it’s crawling. Might have something to so with some action raising the amount of MySQL inquiries to an astronomical level.
If you mess with the source code you lose the support.
That’s odd…as a paying vBulletin user, for well more than 1 year, I’ve hacked the hell out of my source, and I have no restriction at all on support. What do you base this on?
It’s good to be looking for these things, but this hack is very, very old, and the majority of the benefit has since been applied to the showthread.php file, as far as I can tell. Thus, it seems the hack has already been applied - unless I’m really misreading the SQL (it has changed a lot from 1.1. to 2.2.6)
