Why is SDMB the slowest site on Internet?

Anybody knows?

It’s gpt even slower since it became a pay-to-post site, and even slower since I became a non-lurker (read: paying member).

<mod>

Someone in About This Message Board might. But I’m not guaranteeing anything…

Moved to ATMB.

Oooooh. Look what I found up on the top of the forum.

Hope it helps.

I still say the SDMB admin needs to switch to Invision. vBulletin’s search function is notoriously glacial and brings servers to a grinding halt when in use. I dunno if it’s improved with newer versions but another board I frequent (with an even larger message board database) used to use vB and had the same problems. He cited the vB search function as the source of the problem (being a programmer he ought to know) and since the developers of vB weren’t exactly forthcoming with fixes, he switched to Invision and the problem went away.

WAG Ignorance is being disspelled!

God must love the ignorant, he made so many of them!

So you’re the one!

Don’t worry. When my fifteen dollars of fame is up next month, I’m outta here. That should help.

Plenty of ginormous sites use vBulletin without issue with the search function. And they have indeed made some significant improvements to it over the years.

I’ll grant that IBP is pretty cool too though.

This is my favorite site, but it is the absolute worst as far as speed goes, not even close. I get more “could not connect” messages and just plain delays getting to the selected page than ANY other site I visite, including Fark, Stileproject, CNN, NYT, Yahoo, etc. As far as the above-noted thread goes, any suggestion that it has something to do with our computers is horseshit. STMB I suspect has old tech stuff still running. UPDATE DAMNIT, this is embarrassing.

Of course the State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau has old tech stuff; it’s a Chinese bureaucratic agency with no reason to update itself.

Any Brits out there find with me that the board is usually fast and responsive? It’s much quicker now that in it was before subscriptions came in.

Be thankful. It keeps out the riff-raff in search of instant gratification.

D’oh! Please ignore my rant, March Madness and all. :smack:

All this doesn’t explain why poster A (such as myself) has no slowness or timeout problems and poster B has problems all the time.

Not to say it never happens but not to the extent that I would classify it as a problem. Yet there are inumerable threads complaining of both of these things. We have posters threatening to leave because of it.

There seems to be a great disparity among certain posters, all using the same browsers, same vbulliten, at the same time with a great diversity of results. I certainly don’t understand it but there it is.

Oh, sorry Devee , but it seems I may have pre-empted your indicated departure. I re-upped last week. Reconsider. Stick around.

Yes, in the mornings. Once all the yanks are awake and online, mid-afternoon our time, is when I find it slows down.

I’ve suspected before now that many of the big complainers aren’t using tabbed browsers, and sit there with IE stationary, waiting for a single page to load. When it’s running slowly, I just leave tabs in the background in Firefox, which may take some time to load, or may timeout and need refreshing. So it’s only a minor irritant.

It’s remarkably fast and (usually) very responsive for me in Australia too.

Dunno what all the rest of you are complaining about.

I have screen video recorded the various times I get no response/slow as hell response. And as soon as I get it organized I will post the information. It seems to be during around 11AM through 4PM EST the most delays, page not found errors. Which coincides with lunch breaks in the USA. But those are not the only times.
To show that it is this website and not my browser/connection. I used various tabs and other browsers to load other websites while this one was unresponsive.
Some changes should be looked at even if that means no access to non-paying members, you get the 30 days to poke around, if you choose not to pay, you cannot even access SDMB.
I have seen various explainations, including looking at the internet delay website, and during those outages I have also recorded the readings on that website. No go, it’s not an internet delay, it is a server side delay, on your server.

With all that said, regardless I like this place enough that I will pay to play again, but like anything I pay for, I want the best experience possible.

I find the whole internet slow and unresponsive.

But I have a crappy computer.
