Neat OP - I like regional pride, it’s nice to see someone’s pride in their area.
I have a serious amount of writing to do today, I hope these people of mine can keep the drama down so I don’t have to babysit and have the time to get it all done.
Bob I saw the shots from Chopper 10 on the news last night. I honestly think one of the views was from above your house - it looked that familiar.
I’m glad you and the Mrs made it through okay.
We had a bunch of fires up our way too. Nothing as close as to your place, though. And I don’t know the cause of them. But there was one in Va Beach that started on one side of the street, and jumped across a fairly wide road to start burning houses across that street.
As for the OP, my brother-in-law and his family live in Cicero. We watched his town get dumped with a lot of snow last winter. I’m originally from SW PA, and spent quite a few visits up to western NY. Even went to a photography seminar in high school that was held at Rochester Univ.
I lived in Syracuse for a year and really enjoyed it. I miss it now, especially during the fall when it would be apple cider season there. Of course the wineries were fun too!
Mornin’ all.
The only time I’ve been in Upstate NY is when I flew over it when I moved to Boston. I don’t think that counts. Of course, Niagra Falls is on my list of things to do … eventually.
Bob that’s some story.I particularly liked the line “Unless He has a badge or flashing lights, God doesn’t get past me.”
Good Morning MMPers! I’m at work and getting ready to get up and get my second java. I’m a little miffed because we (the management team) had made a decision Saturday to cut someone loose this morning, and I came in and he was still here! WTF? Oh, we (not including me) decided to just write him up instead.
He will eventually get enough rope to hang himself with, but I dont’ wanna wait that long! :::whine:::
Maybe more to post when I get a few minutes this afternoon.

Hi, Upstate New Yorkers!
And everyone else.
As soon as I saw the words ‘lake effect’, I knew where this would be from. For some reason, we have no posters in Ontario’s lake-effect regions.
Is it just me, or is it cold out there? All you westerners and Prairie types are probably snickering at me, because the temperature was above -20C this morning, but the wind made all the difference. Walking into it felt like my face was being stripped by knives. Fortunately, Grampa Sokalski’s Parka (plus assorted boots, mitts, hat, scarf, and regular clothing) kept the rest of me warm.
Bobbio, hubby just wanted me to tell you good job. He said he can relate, especially eating food one step above prison food, and having it taste like the best gormet spread you’ve ever had.
Stay well.
I’m gonna third that! I’m not much of a scholar, but I’d be distracted.
I think my wife has a dress like that somewhere or other (meaning either here or in Seoul-- every time her mother comes to visit she brings another load of clothes, and my closet space shrinks more!).
Cool OP! I love [del]Times Square[/del] Buffalo! I’ve only ever been to Buffalo, actually. One of these years I want to go to NYC proper for New Year. Living in southern Ontario, on the outskirts of Toronto, I know all about lake effect snow. It is a weather phenomenon I could do without.
However, right now there is no lake effect snow. Only bitter, ripping cold. Last night it was windier than Mitt Romney’s exit speech, which brought the wind chill down to -29°C. It’s only marginally better right now, with the wind down to a dull roar and -16°C/-25°C with wind chill. But it’s cool. I’m on vacation next week so that’s buoying me through this one.
Spent too much time on the blog I help run. New host, new server, new problems. Joy. I think we got everything squared away though, except for some minor cosmetic and functional additions. At least now I can concentrate on writing for it instead of fixing it.
Work has been massively hectic, too – with the incredible dumpings we’ve had over the last week and a half, the snow throwers are out in force. Which means they are breaking down in force. Which means dealers are calling us in force looking for parts. Crankshafts and gaskets and gears, oh my!
Hank - Vbob is right – that dress is smokin’!. Twice. Whatever it may do for concealment merely accentuates the mystery, and it doesn’t do a thing to avoid notice, being all shiny and stuff.
VBob - Whew. That was some story. I was so engrossed I completely neglected to notice I was late for my morning break.
That sounds like one hell of a day right there, and so much of it could have been avoided but for the idiocy of youth and/or drugs and alcohol. They should be punished by being forced to spend time as a firefighter so they get a taste of battling what they wrought. Or, y’know, a good horse whipping would do, too.
You do a damn tough and often thankless job, but you keep the place from turning into a giant briquette at the hands of stupid – and good on ya for it. Glad the fire took a pass on the VunderLair.
Sunspace waves Hellooo! GTA here, freezing my Toronto Stars off…
Niagara Falls is in Western New York? Oh, I’ve been there, when I was 7 years old. I didn’t twig about it being in NY 'cause we went there from Canada (my parents have friends in Missisauga (sp?)). All I remember about it is being on the Maid of the Mist, covered from head to toe in yellow plastic of some description!
I still have a metric buttload of drafting to do on those awful documents, but I am not in the mood. I am unofficially on strike. I am going out in sympathy with the (much more creative) Writers’ Guild of America. Technically, what I do is writing, and Og knows, with these documents I can’t help but be creative. It’s all a bit of a fiction, so there you go! I’m on strike! Pbbbttthhhhhhhhh!
In better news, my winter is back now. Overnight lows of about 62°F/17°C and highs of around 77°F/25°C. Yayyyyy! No more frozen toes!!!
It is too cold here. But that’s ok, because it’ll start warming up slightly this afternoon.
When the snow starts.
Lake Effect Snow.
I hate those words.
I love WNY. Living here teaches you to put up with things.
Anybody else see the multi-car pile up on 390 Sunday. White outs are just like driving in a milkbottle
I live in the “Chosen Spot”
Great virgin OP, Soapy! See, that wasn’t so hard, was it? Like just about everyone else here, I’ve only been to Niagara Falls; I may have seen more of western New York, but I don’t really remember it. But I know people from Buffalo, most of whom fled because of that lake effect snow. Not everyone likes being in snow hip deep on a buffalo, I guess.
It’s cold here, too, but not as cold as where some of you are, thank heaven. And the wind has died down, which is very good; this stupid house is built above a crawl space with zero insulation in the floors, so the wind blew under the house and sucked the heat right out through the floors yesterday and it was really hard to keep my feet warm while I was working. Today it’s just clear and cold with only a hint of breeze, which is much more tolerable.
Good on yer for all your hard work helping keep everything from burning down, Bobbio, especially the Vunderlair! Do they have any idea who started the arson fires? I assume prosecutions will be in order if they do. I would certainly hope so. In any case, thanks for doing what you do. We have a volunteer fire company around here, too, so it means a lot that people are willing to do what you do to keep your community safe!
I’ve got zero work to do today, and I really should be spending the day doing something constructive. I also have zero motivation, unfortunately, after working so hard all weekend; right now just sitting here vegging and caffeinating and playing mindless games on my computer is about as much energy as I can summon. Oh well, I’m entitled once in a while, right? Please?
Off to get more coffee.
It’s not cold, cold, it’s “Ow that’s really cold” cold. It was -18 when Mr. Lissar left for work this morning. Damned if I’m going outside today. Not that I could- it’s my first day alone and I don’t think I want to try managing the stroller on a day like this.
Another hello from the other side of the lake!
Does anyone know a tutorial for making frog closures? Or something? Mr. Lissar wants me to take the frogs off one of his old jackets to finish it, but I think taking them off would wreck them.
:wanders off to eat Skor bars for lunch. (N.O.L):
You know, I have never had a Skor bar. Oh and I don’t think **Lunch ** would mind if you nibbled on him.
(Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)
LiLi a bit of googling, and I found this link on Frog closures. I don’t knkow if that is what you are looking for or not, but hope it helps in some way.
Yes, I’m bored at work, why do you ask? And still have to be close to a box of Kleenex. Stoopid cold.
You really don’t. Icy, frigid, still windy (though not like last night) and generally nasty. Indoors is good today.
I am so having alternately unpleasant and amusing mental images right now, followed inexplicably by Grandpa Simpson saying “…as was the style at the time…”
Skor’s are excellent. One candy I haven’t had in a long time is Toffifay (spelling?). Little cups of caramel with a hazelnut embedded in caramel cream and a dollop of chocolate. Yum.
Oh and Flakey bars- we used to get them at my Jewish summer camp. I think they were imported from Israel. Very yum.
Yay for soapy and her first OP!!! All I can say after growing up in upstate NY is that I miss Lilacs. That is all. Pretty as it is, there is no reason to live in a place where sometimes it hurts to breath when you go outside.
And don’t even get me started on Black Flies!
bobbio, keep up the good work! You make the Mumpers proud! We had high winds and high fire risk yesterday as well. And wouldn’t you know I did smell smoke when I got up. Seems that large hunk of swamp land on the GA/FL border that burned for months last year is once again on fire. The cause? A controlled burn that got “out of control.”
I had a busy Saturday since I had my regular errands plus li-berry and a shopping excursion to the Burlington Coat Factory. I thought it would be a good time to look for a lightweight coat to take to Italy next October and found just the perfect one for $60. It’s a Jones of New York 3/4 length black trenchcoat. I am very pleased.
haze, that color suits you to a T. Plus it makes you look hawt!
That’s all I got for now.
Tupug
I like that he shocked the Baptists with that line.
Thanks for keeping the fire controlled and the people safe, Bob.
