Drive-in theaters were almost a forgotten relic from the past.
Social Distancing has created a new demand for Drive-Ins. They can be used for live music events and movies.
Little Rock’s last drive-in closed in the late 1980’s. A new one will open Aug 27 and will show movies Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I assume live music events may eventually get booked there too.
Is this happening in other cities around the country?
I definitely want to go see a drive-in movie with my family. We’ll bring our own Soda, popcorn and candy.
I’m not sure everyone has heard about drive in concerts. They’re currently the only option for live music under social distancing guidelines.
It doesn’t have to be a drive-in theater. Any large venue with lots of parking can be used.
Drive-ins never completely went away here in New York. Which is strange because it’s a seasonal business here unlike in the south. (Or does it get too hot to go to a drive-in in the south during the summer?) There are four operating drive-ins in my area.
Drive-Ins aren’t as much fun in mid summer. It has been cooler this year. No 100+ degree days. That makes a big difference. Mosquitoes feed at dusk and that’s when the movie begins. The location is important for Drive-Ins.
They should get a lot of business this Fall. I hope they run new releases. Crappy movies is what killed drive-ins thirty years ago.
I think they will run new releases during the pandemic. I wouldn’t even consider a indoor theater right now.
If you count temporary events, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk has turned their parking lot into a drive-in for this summer. This seems to be replacing their Movies on the Beach event they held in previous years, where they put up a screen on the beach and people could sit on the beach and watch the movie. I assume it’s easier to enforce social distancing with people in cars rather than on the beach.
Walmart is getting into the drive-in movie scene.
I heard on the news that the Benton, Arkansas Walmart one was open. Crappy movies, though.
We’ve had, for a few years(in this country), a outside theatre on a privatly owned riverside park.
It’s free. You bring your lawn chair and cooler. And lots of mosquito spray. Again, crappy movies.
Some of our drive-ins are going the opposite route. They run older movies that have a good reputation. This week’s selections at one is Jaws and Jurassic Park. Another is showing Total Recall and Galaxy Quest.
Our local drive-in hasn’t opened. I wonder if it’s due to lack of movies, but other s are making due. They even already had a phone order system and online menu. It just seems weird to me.
I just want to sneak in by hiding in the trunk, for old times sake.
What?!? And miss one of life’s great pleasures, going to the concession stand?!?
