And the concept of Melania having sold herself (to the most revolting buyer possible) is certainly part of the public conversation, and has been since 2016 at least, as witness the satirical article linked.
I’ll agree that gratuitous “hooker” humor often lacks the kind of thoughtful assessment of the social dynamic at play that many of us would prefer to see. I won’t agree that wolfpup’s post was hateful or that its existence requires angry denunciation of wolfpup-as-a-person.
Of course this IS the Pit. If people want to try to make their case, have at it (though surely a separate thread would be the proper venue). For me, the post was within-bounds. People of good will may hold differing views.
No one has even come close to saying that. Wolfpup might feel that way, and it does sound like he’s taking it personally. In fact, the point was brought up as “Can everyone (as a board) stop making whore jokes?”
Seriously? You’re going to site cranky-old Bill Maher? He complained about that Dr. Seuss book and Mr. Potato-Head. One was pulled because of a racist stereo type, but also didn’t sell well and no one gave a shit about until the “controversy”. And one’s BRAND was renamed, (not the actual “Mr. Potatohead”,) to Potatohead. But Bill seems to think that liberals are the ones who are obsessed.
You’re also not a comedian and no one assulted you.
Also, if Bill Maher imagines that men hitting other men for insulting their wives’ physical appearance is in any way “a new kind of censorship”, then Maher is not only old and cranky but alarmingly oblivious about the ordinary workings of the world.
I am aware of a couple of people who had some engagements at some college/uni cancelled.
Are there other instances that I’m not aware of that would justify talking about it as if it were a real, pervasive phenomenon?
In reverse, would I be justified in thinking it is another dog whistle for the American right?
(Those folks sure like their inaudible whistles, even after Tr*mp started saying the silent part out loud)
That’s ridiculous. When Carlin was starting out, comedians were frequently arrested for their acts - Carlin was arrested himself. “Cancel culture” doesn’t put you in jail - it gets you the chance to write an editorial in the NYT.
I have little doubt this isn’t some legal tactic to avoid responsibility. You know, the normal Republican playbook, authored by their shitgibbon messiah .
There is no doubt that this bankruptcy proceeding is an attempt by Jones to weasel his way out of paying the money he owes the Sandy Hook families. The NRA tried to do the same thing a couple of years ago, you may recall.
This really makes me personally angry; my family had to endure bankruptcy proceedings when I was a teenager and it is massive amounts of no fun. The laws should not be allowed to be abused in this manner so rich assholes can avoid paying the piper.
