I recall there were attempts to take the quote and apply the “doesn’t she look tired” meme to Hillary during the 2016 election. I don’t know how widespread they were or how much they contributed to her loss. I personally never saw it outside the context of someone knowingly quoting that Doctor Who episode.
I don’t think this would be telling at all against a male prime minister. Women are typically held to a higher standard for things like appearance and external signs of health than are men, but if you are inclined not to believe that, I doubt I can convince you.
Yes, this. You can’t tell the judge the client wants to withhold evidence. In a civil case, you may not even need the permission of the court to withdraw, so you don’t have to say anything.
I seem to recall reading (I believe it was in one of Edwin Newman’s books on language) that at one time, if the BBC described an MP as “tired” it meant he* had obviously been drinking. If the description was “very tired” the inference was that it was amazing he was still on his feet.
* At the time it could be assumed that all MPs were male.
I already conceded that point in my previous post so I am not disinclined to believe it. The only question was whether tired fit into that category of insults that are targeted at women. Given the comments about sleepy Joe and Trump falling asleep in the court room, it seemed to me that lack of energy was an effective insult independent of gender. As for it being the worst and most sexist thing the Doctor has ever done, it doesn’t even crack the top one hundred. Thirty-nine seasons of running around with women whose primary purpose is sitting in awe of his superior intellect provides lots of ammunition.
Out of curiosity, suppose you were one of the writers on Dr. Who, was there a subtle non-sexist “observation” that the Doctor could have made of the prime minister to similar effect that you would have preferred he made?
I seem to remember an episode of Yes, Minister in which the Minister is photographed being quite drunk. He’s relieved when the picture is published in a newspaper with the description that he is “overwrought”. His Private Secretary then points out that the full description was “overwrought as a newt”.
I gather that “pissed as a newt” is rather the British equivalent of “drunk as a skunk”.
He looks like a negative image of his hero, tanTrump. He has put make up just where the other does not. They really complement each other, chromatically at least.
On a side note, I know Gary Peterson/Wrestlezone’s account posts parody content, but stating that
Meeting Mike Lindell at the Waukesha Trump Rally must’ve been what it was like to shake hands with the Apostle Paul before Christ took the stage at the sermon on the mound.
is funny considering St. Paul was born several years after JC, who only lived to be 33 according to tradition.
