I would change “placating Trump” with “embracing right-wing extremism.” I feel like they’re acknowledging that their current platform is too divisive and they need to move towards the center.

Hmm, I wonder if the fact that Kristina (abortion is child sacrifice and demon possession is real) Karamo, is now the party chair, has anything at all with this. 
The article doesn’t indicate any kind of move away from right-wing extremism – just a move away from Trump. I wonder how many of those backers will open their pockets again if the party nominates someone else.

You may be right, or perhaps it’s both. But I read the gist of the donor class’s concerns to be the embrace of election denial. My impression was that right-wing extremism is a-okay. Just line up candidates that can actually win.

The term of course is relative.
The left-most member of the current US Republican party would be a hard rightist within Reagan’s R party, and a frothing skin-head by the standards of traditional 1950s -2010s European politics.
I had never come across the term “Reich-wing” until earlier today, and then I come here and see it again. But I like it.
