That’s hard to argue with!
I’m under the “unsure” category. The way everything was handled was such a shitshow.
Even Bill Barr seemed to shrug about the finding of suicide.
While many who were close to Epstein have publicly questioned that he died by suicide, Barr has said it was — and remains — the most logical conclusion. The alternative would’ve been too complicated, Barr said in his August deposition.
“This would’ve required coordination from probably two dozen people, maybe, within the prison. And all these people were in different groups,” Barr said. "You know, the people who were repairing the cameras, the people who, you know, were responsible for opening and closing the door, the people who were responsible for putting in a new cellmate, things like that. "
The scene was so fucked up that I don’t think it was possible to do a proper investigation. Too much shit had been moved around, it was a mess. Whether intentional or negligent.
I am generally not a proponent of conspiracy theories, but the idea that Epstein’s suicide was staged and covered up seems like probably the most plausible CT I’ve ever heard of.
The only real counter I can bring is that Inspector General Michael Horowitz concluded it was suicide, and he seems to be pretty unbiased and reliable given his job history and experience.
NPR: Negligence, staff failures led to Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide, a DOJ report says
Inspector General Michael Horowitz appeared to directly address far-right conspiracy theories that have flourished in the wake of Epstein’s death.
He said though there were failures at several levels, and Epstein appeared to receive special treatment while in jail, his death was still a suicide.
“While we determined MCC New York staff engaged in significant misconduct, we did not uncover evidence contradicting the FBI’s determination there was no criminality in connection with how Epstein died,” Inspector General Michael Horowitz said in a message provided in the report.
But I’m not saying this rules it out. He concluded that he didn’t find evidence that contradicted the official findings, he didn’t say he found evidence that proved it or ruled out any other possibility. At least that’s how I interpret it. I doubt we’ll ever know the truth.
I see the idea that it was suicide as a conspiracy theory to cover a murder. But, I guess we don’t know.
(And I give a flying fuck what Bill Barr says about it.)
“…a known troll and bigot, a woman of notoriously vile and intemperate disposition.”
I only mentioned him, because he was the first person to give an authoritative declaration as far as I know, and no official has contradicted it since, either from autopsy or any other following investigations. And I also mentioned it because he seemed to reach his conclusion by saying it is effectively the simplest explanation, which is an extremely weak argument.
Even if Epstein did kill himself, there’s no way of knowing if something was said to him to trigger his suicide.
Epstein’s death benefits Trump. The story of what happened should be proven, else it’s false.
Unless one is unfamiliar with how it is that things that benefit Trump come to be.
What could anyone have told him that was worse than the suicide solution, other than “You will rot in prison until your dying day”? That was in the books anyway.
Maybe the idea that many security cameras don’t work, and people don’t check on prisoners as often as they are legally required to (both true things that have been acknowledged since), and so there were ample opportunities for Epstein to suffer abuse if he didn’t take advantage of all the extra sheets left behind that oops, someone negligently left behind.
Yeah, I forgot how corrupt “justice” can be under Trump.
I believe Epstein topped himself as much as I believe Mr. Potato Head was shot in the ear.
One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is auto-erotic-asphyxiation (or whatever it’s called) that went bad for him.
I hate having to sit back and accept that we will never know all the crimes this administration has done.
It does immediately clear two hurdles that most conspiracy theories don’t. The first being that it’s actually possible, it doesn’t violate any laws of physics, require nonexistent technology or rely on a worldwide conspiracy. And the second being there’s an actual sensible motive for somebody to do it.
So yes, it’s certainly more plausible than the great majority of CTs. A low bar too be sure, but “it could be true” is certainly more plausible than the standard of “it’s impossible.”
People who are already depressed and suicidal can be pushed over the edge.
TIL that Nancy Mace is the first female to graduate from the Citadel.
I remember when all my right-wing friends were livid at Shannon Faulkner, the first female to attend the Citadel.
I wonder what they would have said if I had told them they’d be voting for women like her in thirty years.
Although I have little regard for her as a Member of Congress, Mace wrote a pretty good book about her experiences at the Citadel:
Perjury Traitor Greene’s public falling out with the felon-in-chief garners her threats.
And this bit is likely to get her death threats. (The bolding is mine.)
