Mentally ill?
Well, that too, but…
I just learned today on Facebook that she’s not even a Christian. A friend posted something supporting her and a MAGA replied: “Christian faith doesn’t have bishops” and “This woman is not a Christian.”
You see, Budde was actually being disrespectful to Christians with her sermon, according to this person.
Also, I think the thing about bishops will be news to the Pope, who is the Bishop of Rome. Any ideas about what that claim is about?
Many Evangelical and Fundamentalist denominations are fairly decentralized and lack the sort of church hierarchy that Roman Catholicism, and most “mainline” Protestant denominations, have. They don’t have “ranks” like bishops, much less having cardinals or popes.
A lot of individual Evangelical and Fundamentalist churches are effectively independent; they may be tenuously tied to a larger organization (such as the Southern Baptist Convention), or they may consider themselves to be nondenominational.
It sounds to me like the friend of yours is of the belief (which I’ve seen held before) that only their own flavor of faith is “truly Christian,” and that someone who is a Catholic, or an Episcopalian (as Bishop Budde is), is not actually Christian. Catholics, in particular, are commonly accused by Fundamentalists and Evangelicals as being “papists,” and worshipping the Pope, rather than God.
This.
And it warms my heart to see (conservative Republican) Protestants putting down their anti-Catholic bigotry to agree with the (conservative Republican) Catholics that Episcopalians are the real Satan worshipers!
Peter was a disciple of Jesus, and became the first Pope – thus founding the Catholic church. Since Peter was a disciple of Christ, was the first Pope, and founded the Catholic church, the Catholic church can’t possibly be Christian!
As I was reading the guy’s (I don’t know him; he posted on a friend’s page) numerous posts in the Facebook thread, I thought of this scene from The Blues Brothers:
Head Nazi: “What did you find out?”
Nazi Flunky: “Okay. I called a friend at the Motor Vehicle Department. That license plate is like a rash all over the computer. The car belongs to a known traffic menace.”
Head Nazi: “What’s his name?”
Nazi Flunky: “His name is Elwood Blues. He’s got a record a mile long. And he’s a Catholic.”
I think that kind of accusation is usually called a “pap smear”.
Why you gonna stirrup trouble in this thread?
Neigh!
You don’t know there will be trouble. That’s pure speculum!
(Speculation? I tried…)
Your friend is another data point showing magaters don’t know what’s in the Bible they worship.
“I like Christ very much. I do not much care for most who call themselves ‘Christians.’” - Mahatma Gandhi (attrib.)
As practiced by House Speaker Mike Johnson, too! (My bolding.)
Here’s what Budde said:
And here’s how Johnson characterized those words:
“I ask you to have mercy” is not only NOT radical, it’s positively deferential. No demand–just a plea.
Usually Trumpites approve of deference toward their Lord and God. Their religion is so hard to figure out!
I’m amazed that these same people push so hard for the 10 Commandments to appear in public; how do they reconcile to themselves their worship of Donald with “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”…?
Now he’s against sowing division?
Sounds like the Republicans need to get themselves to their safe spaces. What a bunch of crybabies!
They only read the “Og smite” parts and filter out the “Be kind” ones.
That’s the point of having power: you can cry, cry, cry, and sycophants will describe you as Strong and Brave. (Or they will if they know what’s good for them.)
Not really.
He just has a list of insults he trots out to express his outrage that someone failed to properly worship his God (Donald).
The insults don’t have to be consistent from one instance to the next.
