A Permanant marker, my t-shirt and my nephew...

…a surefire way to make a mess.

Is there any way to get rid of black permanant marker from a t-shirt that actually works? Thanks in advance.

For magic marker stains try the following remedies. Always blot, not rub, any stain and have a clean, white absorbent cloth to put under the garment. Also, lay the stain side (usually the outside) against the cloth. Apply the stain remover (to the back side of the stain), let stand for a couple of minutes and then blot the area trying to push the (hopefully) now soluble stain into the under-cloth. Rinse with warm water and repeat if needed or recommended. Remember, if in doubt, always test the fabric for color fastness on an inconspicuous area.

Try these stain removers in this order: Rubbing alcohol, Mild detergent, Plain water, Dry cleaning fluid ( repeat only twice). Also, hairspray has often been recommended by many as the best substance for removing all types of ink. Finally, if the t-shirt is white you can try to bleach it out.

I’m not sure if this is true of all permanent markers, but I know that the ink in Sharpies is ethanol soluble, meaning that it washes out in alcohol. (I’ve always used the 70% ethanol (in water) that we use for sterilizing stuff in the lab, but I’m sure anything with a really good kick shoud be sufficient ;))

There are products like Goo Gone too that may be able to get it out.

At auto parts stores you can get some cream to wash your hands with & that works great on stains. If the marker has a phone number on it, you could call it & see what they suggest.
