OK, I just looked at page 7 of that thread. Yeah, that was actually pretty ugly, What Exit. I knew Triskadecamus was nuts for Liberal but I didn’t think he’d follow him down that garden path.
I think it’s an amazing example of libertarianism in action.
What, you think this is a nanny state?
eBan…I like it!
Of course, then you have the embarassment of only getting $1.53 Canadian bid for you to leave. :o
Not to mention that twicks, whom I trust, says she knows him off-line and he’s actually a pretty good guy and she was pretty baffled by how he was acting here lately. So maybe prr saw the chance to leave a place that wasn’t bringing out his good side and get paid for it at the same time. Hell, for all we know he was planning on leaving anyway.
I left the Board myself for almost 18 months when things got rough IRL and I was becoming a bitch that even I didn’t like on the Board. I just wish I had thought to have someone pay for my sabbatical . . . .
Just a note, **ETF ** jokingly already made this suggestion in the thread. You had no reasonable way to know that considering the size of the trainwreck it was.
Jodi, you have misunderstood evey point I was trying to make. I am sorry. I do not know how to answer you. I have protested when posters I do not particularly like got warnings for insulting me. I will provide the link if you do not believe me. It will take a bit to find.
Jim
Jodi, On preview, I believe you nailed it in one on your second post.
I’m pretty sure I am too. But just in case I’m not, which SDMB subscribers would you guess are most likely to spend large sums of money on impulse?
If it reduced the cost of my membership, I’m all for it.
Like I said, it was mutual. To blame of for this, but not the other, is ridiculous. If you think Lib did a bad thing by offering, then prr did an equally bad thing by accepting. End of story.
Hmm. I did indeed miss that. Sorry, ETF.
Getting hard to say anything original these days.
[ot google ad note]"Get hats and other gear that say ‘You’re a Great American!’ "[/otgan]
Well, I’m usually fairly swift on the uptake, so let me know what part of this I’ve messed up:
-
You’re pissed at Lib for making a “scummy offfer.” I’ve got no problem with this. My only – extremely weak – defense of Lib is that I seriously doubt he expected to be taken seriously, and he found himself backed into a corner once he was. But that thread was certaiinly not his shining moment and, whether he likes it or not, and regardless of whatever spin he tries to put on it, I predict he’ll wear that thread around his neck for quite sometime. But hey – pit away.
-
You think " the deal should never have been allowed to be made on the dope." I’m pretty sure I didn’t misunderstand you, since I’ve quoted you directly. So my question to you remains: Why not? Why shouldn’t the mods allow such a deal on the dope? I’m asking you this seriously: You’re mad they didn’t step in; why should they have?
IOW, I think your anger is misplaced. Be mad at Lib, be mad at prr, be mad at Tris if you must for enabling the situation, if only through the goodness of his heart – heck, be mad at the situation itself. But there’s precious little reason to be mad at the mods, other than you personally don’t like the result and therefore you personally wish they had stopped it.
I would say Liberal, I know of no others.
You are correct, **PRR ** should have back down, he chose not to. I have not said he was in the clear. What is the sense in pitting a poster who has left the board.
Liberal made the offer that I obviously feel was in very bad taste and I find offensive. So Liberal, who actually is paying the $500, is the biggest jerk and the one still here to be pitted. If nothing else, what a foolish thing to waste money on. He could paid for 33.3333 posters to stay on the board for the price one departure.
Jim
This is the interesting point that was triggered for me; how attached to reading/posting are you? When your post count is in the ten thousand plus mark, does that mean it’s important to you?
I think it would be very interesting, as a theoretical exercise, to find out how much leaving would be worth to people. Probably couldn’t make it as a thread - I imagine it would break rules somehow, but it sure would be interesting to see who’d leave for half a K, who for less, and who would find it very hard to quit unless quite a bit of $ were to be at issue.
Jodi, you are too quick for me, this must be why I almost never pit posters or mods, I cannot keep up.
Point one is correct. Point two is correct and to answer that will explain why I am disappointed in the mods. I am not mad at them I am disappointed. There is a subtle difference I believe.
I do not believe that any poster or group of posters should be allowed to buy another poster off the board. I believe it diminishes the Dope if they allow people to be bought off. You must be aware that some people claim the mods have taken it easier on liberal as he has bought some other posters their memberships. I never accepted this and I still do not. However the action of allowing this farce to occur will feed into the idea that different rules exist for liberal and he can buy his way out of problems. I do not know what else to say.
Jim
The precedent of allowing such things to happen. I’m an adult, why can’t I make the decision to be a jerk? Also as an adult why can’t I link to any old site I want to without a 2 click rule?
It could be claimed I am “Addicted to the Dope”. Check my post count. I could honestly say I would not leave the dope for $500. I guess my price would be higher. I have spent over $500 in less than two years on Dope related stuff. **PRR ** has different priorities and was willing to depart for this amount. He also did not post anywhere near as much as I do. Of course few do.
Jim
**PRR **valued $500 more than posting here. Liberal valued his not posting here more than his $500. They both feel like they came out ahead. Win-Win.
For the record, if anyone ever gets the idea about paying me off, $500 ain’t gonna do it. So, start saving your money. Of course, if it was $500 per head…
Besides that, he deprived the Chicago Reader of the $14.96, or whatever, in subscription fees they would have reaped from PRR. Were I associated with the company, I’d take that as a hostile act, or at least try to figure some way to wangle a user fee for transactions of that type.
Besides, it would be most unseemly.
I’m curious how much the Mods will facilitate this agreement. Will any staff member alert Trisk or Liberal if they ban a sock they suspect of being prr?
As far as I know, we’re not allowed to do any of the following on this Board without prior permission:
- pimp our private businesses here on the dope.
- advertise our professional or amateur services for pay.
- solicit for charities, whether public or private.
- solicit for direct monetary aid for fellow Dopers.
- fund scholarships for Dopers.
- engage in online gambling, betting, or wagering for actual money.
even though those things don’t actually impact the Board directly. I could be wrong and may have missed a policy change; if so I’m sure someone will tell me off.
Now here we have a commercial transaction, contract, online written wager, whatever you want to call it, where a party is paying another to refrain from posting - something that does directly impact the board (especially since the Chicago Reader will be out 2 year’s subscription) - and nothing is done?
I’ll leave aside the unseemliness of it, which makes this bit of drama one of the top 3 worst melodramatic events on this Board in the 7 years I’ve been here.
I’m not going to criticize the Staff here directly, but I will say that I’m stunned to see this. This sets a precedent for behaviour which is, IMO, going to be impossible to defend.
Well, with respect, I hope they facilitate it like one would facilitate handling a rabid skunk found in the back yard. By staying the hell away from it.
