Okay, mea culpa!! It was a stupid idea, created while wearing my rosiest-colored glasses as regards human nature! I unreservedly withdraw it from consideration (if it ever really was :)).
Oh, the fun I could have! Pleeeeease? Pleeeeeeeeeease Tuba? I’ve been such a good girl for so long here (and that’s so hard for me!) and I’ll pick up after myself and I hardly take up any room and you’ll never know I was here!
OK, I’m kidding, but I’m flattered that Poly would trust me to edit something of his. Anyhoo, just another vote to say that the spelling fixers and double post oopsers make me crazy. It doesn’t have to be a “rule”, but if it were mentioned a few times by a mod/admin, it might get the point across and people will slowly but surely stop doing it.
Just in case Poly hasn’t totally killed his Junior Mods idea yet, I must also point out that some of the more, er, Freudian typos can be a great source of amusement.
Only the non-kosher junior mods, of course.
I heartily agree with the OP. If a typo changes the meaning, or is contained with recommended search criteria*, go for it, otherwise, I think we’ll figure out that “otu” means “out.”
*- Someone asking for Donald Duck history would need to search for a fella named “Carl Barks.” But if I accidentally direct them to Carl Bark or Karl Barks, I’d need to clarify.
Somehow I’d got the idea that apologising for double posts was considered polite. Oops!
I suspect that anyone new to the Board and seeing all the “Sorry” posts may think the same way, so I’m in favour of a sticky covering the issue and the issue of spelling mistakes.
500+ posts and I’m still learning…
I tend to clean up double posts when I see them, but it takes a little time. If there is an apology post also, I can either remove it from the thread or leave it there and let said apologist apologize for nothing. It’s just easier for me if you don’t apologize.
Again: if you make a typo that’s misleading, you can always ask a Moderator to fix it (like typing “Karl” for “Carl”, as in Troy’s example, as if anyone would mistype the name of the world’s greatest comic artist).
I’m sorry, but where in his post did Troy mention “Jazzy” John Romita?
CK’s just had a long day is all. When he mentioned the world’s greatest comics artist his finger slipped and he accidently typed “Carl Barks”, when he meant to type “Rob Liefeld”.
This calls for the FAQ supplement, the IRP (Informally Requested Policies). Let’s see… we have:
[li]Don’t post a typo correction post unless the typo has significantly altered the meaning or understanding of your message.[/li][li]Don’t post an apology for double posting… we all know you didn’t mean to.[/li][li]Only use your canned .sig once per thread. [/li]
Peace.
