A Plea For Tolerance and Understanding

While I realise that by posting here I’m probably preaching to the choir, but this. I mean, please. Why does a post about a friend’s suicide need to turn into the same old pile-on, with people on both sides unwilling to set aside their own egos for the sake of a poster who may be dealing with a lot of grief right now.

Lack of compasion makes the grown-up Eonwe cry.

Friggin Liberals. Ooops, did I say that out loud.

I’m proud of you guys for wanting genteel and civilised debate, but is’nt this called the Pit for a reason? I mean, I don’t post a whole hell of alot but I always figured this was the place to voice your anger and hurt some feelings as long as it was within the moderator’s guidelines.

It’s like the Appollo theater, people who go there know they are going to get the nastiest of the audience. Except the great thing here is when it gets too hot for you, you just stop posting and stop reading the thread. This is the internet, it does’nt affect you. I say speak your mind no matter how ignorant or filled with anger you are.

I’ll start with a Conan O’Brien quote “People should be able to keep midgets as pets!!! There, I said it.”

I’m curious, Thomas…do you truly think that a person cannot voice their anger and hurt feelings without being hateful? Do you think it is impossible to respond to someone else who has voiced anger and hurt feelings without being mean and vicious? Even when you disagree vehemently with them?

When you have a problem with someone in your day-to-day life, do you find it impossible to resolve without resorting to invective?

Maybe you and I are viewing this message board differently. I see it as a group of people who are interacting. I don’t see it as a bunch of ghosts. Sometimes I wonder if people realize that everyone here is a real person…just because we haven’t all met in person doesn’t negate anyone’s humanity.

Is it really so totally out of reason for people to treat others with decency?

Hey guys, thanks for posting in this thread so as to remove that horrid user name from three posts back being listed at the top of the Pit. I’d have posted myself if I didn’t fear to be stuck there myself for the rest of my life.

Oops.

Now I’m here anyway, let me say that I do agree with you in mind, Scotticher. I do not see the reason for using such language either. On the other hand Thomas Stearns has a point that people are apparently allowed to do this here in order to vent steam. Still, why is it that people feel a need to use strong expletives which I’m too embarassed to use here? My current theory is that it has to do with a cultural thing: I’ve been taught British English which is very prim and proper. Even seeing all those American movies (which I thoroughly enjoy, BTW) hasn’t completely melted my resistance to actually using words like F*** and A** in conversation, even on a message board, even if for fun. So what is it with you people?

:now getting the hell outta here before the flaming starts:

I’d hate to see TTT stuck at the top of the list forever. Perhaps this will help.

I think the reason is partly because tone of voice doesn’t come through in text; therefore, tone of word choice must be used as a substitute.

I think it’s because it’s more likely to get a response. In fact, it’s more likely to get a negative response, which is even better because then you’ve got a flame war.

And let’s admit it, flame wars are kinda fun aren’t they?

Well, green_dragon…maybe lots of people think they ARE more fun. I guess I have made it abundantly clear that I don’t agree, but then maybe I am not in the majority here.

All I wanted to do with this thread is to ask that people think before they go off the deep end with invective over things that seem as though they should have been able to amicably resolve… A lot of people didn’t agree, and they have that right.

Now that this thread is no longer at the top of the BBQ pit, I would ask once again…for the last time… that people consider their words in the pit. It IS the pit, and I know it is here for a reason. I know it serves a purpose. All I suggest is that when you post here, in the Pit, you consider your words and be sure that you really want to be the person who is posting those words. If you do, this thread wasn’t intended for you. If you don’t, then I hope this thread has caused you to think twice, post once.

Thank you, any of you who have read this. Whether you agreed or not…
