The actual implementation of voter ID laws which were struck down were, as GIGObuster pointed out, specifically designed to reduce minority voting. Let me repeat that: Specifically. Designed. To. Reduce. Minority. Voting.
I think that might be racist.
Let me give an analogue: suppose someone says: “let’s reduce crime.” A worthy sentiment, supported by Democrats and Republicans alike. Then the actual implementation of the crime reduction bill basically just doubles sentences but only for minorities. I think the Democrats who supported the idea of reducing crime might not support the approach of deliberately targeting minorities.
What are the reasons that 63% of Democrats support voter ID?

Why don’t you research it and let us know.
A plea to thread hijackers – stop, please!
Current research tell me that they agree in theory, but they also know that the practice is the lousy part of the issue, it is clear that what takes place in practice is what is ignored by many Republicans.
Even the courts agree with that.
And as per the OP, I will stop discussing this item.
What are the reasons that 63% of Democrats ignore what takes place in practice and support voter ID?

It was a few days ago and all, but in case I wasn’t clear before:
It’s a fair cop. My apologies to the boards and to iiandyiii.

Accepted!
I started a new thread to continue the voter ID discussion, if anyone is so inclined:
Back on topic: Stephen Bannon’s appointment is starting to bring some right-wing opposition out of the woodwork (although perhaps not that surprising). The Financial Times article is firewalled but here are the relevant bits:
More tiny cracks in party unity, although whether they are lasting ones remains to be seen.
Of COURSE there’s an element of blatant racism among Trump supporters. I recognized it from Day One, which is one reason I pledged (and stuck to my pledge) never to vote for Trump.
I am not Jewish- I’m an Irish Catholic. But my name sounds Jewish, which means that whenever I’ve tried to argue politics in chat rooms or on political boards, I’ve seen plenty of “Go back to Israel” type rejoinders.
I say of Trump what I said about Ron Paul years ago: in my opinion, he is not an anti-semite. But some of his biggest fans are, and he has done nothing to discourage them.
