Do you ever go out driving with no destination in mind, just for the fun of driving?
If you do, how old are you?
I’ve noticed several commercials suggesting people do this. I did it when I first got a driver’s license, and for a couple of weeks when I got a brand new car, but that’s it.
Not so much anymore but in my early 20’s if I had nothing better to do (which was fairly often) sometimes I’d just get in the car, pick a direction and drive. The DC area is all very concentrated so I’d have to go pretty far to see anything unfamiliar, but I’d drive down streets I’d never gone down before to see where they go, or explore neighborhoods/towns I’d never been in before. Found a lot of great stuff that way.
I remember wondering about this as a child (in the 70s), when I encountered the concept in films and literature. Never done it, either as a driver or passenger. My dad is a big greenie from way back before it was fashionable and would probably disown any family member who got in a car for any other reason than actual need to go someplace (that was too far for a bike and too inaccessible for PT). It would just feel…weird. I don’t even like the fact that I’m now in the car every day to take the kids to school.
The funny thing is, I actually enjoy driving. I just need to get my fix visiting the inlaws 2 hours away.
I used to do it all the time, especially at night when I couldn’t sleep. We just moved to New England, which has great driving, and the husband and I will occasionally go out for a drive just for the hell of it. I’m 29, female.
Not at all anymore. When I was in college and charged gas to my parent’s credit card, I used to go driving for fun. It was one way to get to be by myself.
As I got older, I realized cars need maintenance with more miles on them and that it is never cheap. I drive as little as possible now.
I go out on a “Sunday drive” every couple of weeks and I take mutliple-day roadtrips throughout the year. I love driving back roads where cars are few and far between. Now, getting to those back roads is another story. I don’t like driving major interstates at all, and having to pass through miles of “expressways” bordered by endless strip malls is no fun either.
43 and I have never just gone out for a drive with no destination or goal in mind. The idea of just driving for fun really baffles me because I find driving a chore and would happily give up my license and car if I could do without it.
I do however get out on my bicycle for fun but so wish I could also use it for commuting to work and other things I currently have to use the car for.
I have no license so driving is no option at all, but I remember from the few times I have driven a car that I found it great fun, so I might have been a recreational drive.
I do but not very often. Maybe a couple of times a year I’ll drive up the coast between San Diego and L.A. and get lunch at some place I’ve never been to before but looks interesting and then drive back down.
I’ve definitely done this in the past. When it’s particularly pleasant outside, maybe a nice autumn afternoon, bring along some good music and just drive. But that was before gas was $3+ per gallon.
