I’m wondering how much of the general population actually enjoys driving. Judging by the number of horrible drivers on the road, I’m guessing it’s a low percentage.
So: Do you like driving? Why or why not? Also: what kind of car do you drive, with what kind of transmission?
Personally, I love driving. I find it oddly relaxing, for some reason.
I loved driving across the country on state roads.
I like driving if there is something good on the radio, like ‘Fresh Air’; I’ll take the long way around to listen to that.
I drive a little four cylinder manual, usually with a large dog in the back seat.
I absolutely hate driving. Until a year ago I owned an Opel (german GM subsidiary) with manual transmission, nothing since then.
The last year I had the car I used it about once a month and if at all possible tried to make my roommates drive me around in my own car. So, no I really didn’t like it. Long distance trips were a little better than inner city traffic.
I like driving. I prefer “open road” driving to city driving, of course.
And I always use my turn signal (huge pet peeve of mine!).
I have an automatic now, but I learned to drive (too many years ago!) on a 4-speed Volkswagon Bug, and I always had manuals. Seven years ago, we bought a Saturn wagon that was my first automatic.
I borrowed my sister’s car a few weeks ago and it made me realize how much fun it is to drive a stick shift. My next car is going to be a manual again.
I love to drive. I commute 55 miles to school. I have a class “A” CDL, I’m licensed to drive anything on the highway except a motorcycle. You ought to drive something with a 2 speed rearend. Then when you shift 5 gears you can switch to high and you have 5 more plus 2 reverse gears. You seldom use more than about 6 gears, though. I drive a pickup with a five speed.
I love driving!! I drive a Fiat with manual transmission. When I was learning to drive, I really hated it - it was so stressful, watching everything on the road. Now, its great - but there are so many bad drivers out there who really don’t give a crap about themselves or others - they just want to get from A to B faster than anyone else.
I drive carefully and well (I think) but I don’t drive like I’m scared of the others on the road, I’m not aggressive just assertive. I think you have to be these days.
On the other hand, I love to be a passenger - when Emofkuniv comes over, he drives usually - this is because he doesn’t drive in London and I do all the driving in Dublin, so its a treat for us both. The best drive we ever did was the road from Cork to Killarney (anybody who’s done it knows it well) - that was a bit scary (very foggy up there) and so much fun.
I love driving! I drive a large SUV automatic for everyday driving, but my wife and I have a lovely weekend driver that is manual…I much prefer manual - especially when it’s attached to a 2000 porche boxter But then again I don’t have a boxter…so our little MG suites us just fine!
On occasion, but I hate driving in traffic, never enjoy that.
Every couple of weeks I do a cross-country commute about 40 miles to another office and provided I’m not stuck behind a tractor it’s really enjoyable. I do the trip after the rush hour so there are no queues. Lots of fast/bendy A-roads, fun.
Christmas morning trip back to the folks on London: WhooHoo! I’ve had stretches of the M1, M11 and almost incredibly the M25 to myself! Get to test the high end of the speedo.
Mercedes, automatic, no-one in their right mind drives a manual Merc’
Yeah, same here. I don’t see why people don’t use it: it’s so easy, right next to your fingers.
I suppose it’s because all the people who are steering with their knees while talking on a cellphone, applying makeup and eating a donut don’t have any appendages to spare.
I don’t like driving, and consider it mostly foolish, awkward, and painful. 90% of the time getting behind the wheel of a car means getting stuck in traffic, and getting upset about being stuck in traffic.
Personally, I’ve never found a car that had a comfortable seat-- it’s like they bend the wrong way compared to my spine (Note to car manufacturers-- I have shoulder blades!).
The only time I like driving is when I’m on a motorcycle or a scooter. Being on two wheels confers the instant knowledge that yes, I am driving, and I have to focus on nothing but driving. And I get to blast past traffic stuck in gridlock
I hate driving. I grew up in NYC and my parents owned their last car when I was 6. I neither knew how to drive nor needed to know until I left for college… got my first license when I was 20.
I also have a vision problem that prevents me from seeing in stereo. This makes tracking moving objects difficult, particularly in low-light conditions (ie night on roads with no streetlights). I have gotten a lot better at driving at night but it is still a fairly nerve-wracking experience.
I drive a 1991 Nissan Stanza – Automatic. A friend of mine taught me to drive stick on his brand-new Miata (a very easy car to drive stick on apparently). And after learning that I can honestly say I LOVE my automatic.
I used to love to drive, especially at night. There was a summer that I had -really- bad insomnia, and there were a lot of thunderstorms that year. Almost every night I’d drive out and chase one! Great fun.
I drive an automatic. A '96 Buick. I’ve cut down a lot on the night driving as my vision is starting to not be so good at night, which bugs me. Still, a long open stretch of road is a lot of fun for me.
I hate driving. Hate hate hate hate hate it. We just got rid of our pick up - it was an 80-something Chevy S-10, manual transmission which had started refusing to start. We’re now the proud owners of a 1993 Aerostar Van - the full size one. It’s automatic. It starts. And I still hate driving. Yes, I use my turn signals. Always.
I drive a new Ford Taurus, automatic. However, I am away at school, and my car is at home. The only driving I get in now is as designated driver, in which case I drive whatever car I’m told to.
When I’m home, I drive either my car (Taurus) or one of my parents’ cars. Mom has a Subaru Forester, manual, and dad has a Subaru Impreza, also manual. I prefer mine and the Forester.
Hate driving. Haaaaaate it. I am actually an excellent driver, though, probably because I hate it so much that I am extra-careful.
Haven’t owned a car in 20 years—I just drive my mother’s car when I visit her. If and when I move, my no. 1 priority will be to find another community where I don’t need a car.
I used to love to drive, back when I was young and owned sports cars. Then Jimmy Carter and the double-nickle law. (55 mph speed limit) took all the fun out of it. Now I just get from point A to point B as quickly and effeciently as possible.
I now drive an '88 Ford Ranger XLT, automatic. I always had sticks before. My Mazda B2200 with a five speed was nice to drive. The Ford’s an ‘old guy’ truck.
And I use my turn signals, before I get to the corner.
I love to drive. Just stay out of my way. We have 9 cars and 7 motorcycles of all sizes, shapes and configurations and I like them all. The Fiat and the BMW are the most fun.
I enjoy driving highways, but I really prefer not to drive for short trips around town. And of course traffic is no fun. I like driving while listening to hockey games on the radio, which is odd, because hockey on the radio while I’m not driving is sort of boring, but it’s fascinating when I’m on the road.
Where I live now I have a Suzuki Samurai, 5-speed manual 4wd. It’s fun off road, but fairly dull otherwise. I don’t drive it faster than 45mph, which feels plenty fast given the poor handling of the car and the crummy roads.
Back home I have a Honda Civic 4-door, 5 speed manual. I have ascertained that its maximum speed is 112 mph. But I normally drive nearer 70, which is the speed limit on the good freeways.
