I did not know that was an Animal House reference, as I don’t believe I’ve ever seen it. Sorry about that. Maybe BlinkingDuck knew this. But you do realize you were called an asshat for that smart ass comment, whether it was a movie reference or not? You shouldn’t be able to make cracks like that and not expect a reaction. That’s what I’m talking about. You should have received the same sort of “note” but given that you’re a mod, you are allowed to make such comments, which may or may not be movie quotes but are still rather obnoxious. Or of course both should be allowed. You dish it, you should have to take it without “noting” someone for reacting.
God I sound like someone’s grandmother. Just forget it. I was only asking a question, not complaining.
Are you serious? Do you really think in black and white like that?
If you’re not snarking, it must be robot response? Are 90% of GD comments robotic responses? Because I see plenty comments out there without the snark.
NO, what I expect is when a mod chooses to give a snarky response he shouldn’t be surprised when he gets a reaction. That’s all. I have no problem WITH the snark, what I have a problem with is not allowing that reaction to be expressed once it’s out there.
This isn’t high school and the mods aren’t teachers.
You’re mistaken about the question I asked. It had nothing to do with Marley’s Bluto snark, it had to do with the response to the reaction he generated with it. It was no worse than Marley’s comment, and the reaction to a silly word like “asshat” is where I’d suggest Marley “lighten up”.
It was such a slight thing, I was just curious about how it should be handled. It really wasn’t a complaint.
Are you kidding? There’s no “possibly” about it. Your remark was far more insulting than Marley’s.
I’ve never seen it used as a quote, period. And while I’ve seen Pulp Fiction, it’s been several years since the last time I saw it. I don’t remember every line of dialog from every movie I’ve ever seen. However, on looking it up, in the movie it was used in an extremely hostile manner by Jules to Brett just before they filled him full of lead. Not exactly a “jocular” remark.
Is this an insult? Or maybe you are quoting from a movie?
Yes, there is a rule against insults, but in practice we do allow some snark. If you’re going try to make the case that we should have zero tolerance for snark, then logically I should issue you a warning for that “new to the Internet” crack above.
I have no doubt that you could do it, based on your previous posting history. I, on the other hand, would be twitching like a scared rabbit if I were forced to remove all snark from my posts for a full month, and I suspect that most(if not all) of the oh-so-easily-offended would be incapable of posting at all.
Umm, to who? The target of the “English motherfucker…” didn’t complain, and in fact carried on posting in the same thread. On the other hand, the guy who Marley snarked at did take it initially as an insult. I have to admit, upon reading Marley’s post I thought it was a pretty dickish thing to write. How can there be any debate that Marley’s words were thought as insulting when the guy who they were aimed at ended up getting a mod note … for taking the words the wrong way?
God damn it Colibri, at least try to keep up. If you’re saying that moderators can’t be expected to remember lines from every movie ever made, then the words of posters should be judged on their plain meaning. Warning one poster for insults via quoting a film while letting another get away with it (purely on the basis of whether you remember watching the film or not) is bullshit and completely arbitrary. Here’s a hint: if a phrase is clearly being used in a jocular fashion, written in all caps, and nobody seems to take offence, then at least attempt a two second Google search before swinging in from the jungle and throwing your massive mod dick around.
The point is that the plain meaning of calling someone a “motherfucker” is orders of magnitude worse than saying “your history teacher was an idiot”. One is a direct insult of a poster with a word not even allowed in the Pit, the other is actually just insulting your teacher.
As I pointed out in your original complaint about this, it’s irrelevant whether or not the target complains. Insults like motherfucker are not permitted in GQ.
You might try to keep up as well. We’ve been over this already. The issue is the degree of the insult, not whether or not it was a movie quote. “Motherfucker” is much more insulting than having Bluto as your English teacher.
Here’s a hint: Don’t address another poster as “motherfucker” in GQ in any circumstances, whether or not you think you are being jocular and whether or not you are using a quote from a movie. I’m certainly not going to do a Google search to check whether every insult in GQ might be a movie quote.
And let’s leave my jungle activities and my massive dick out of this.
I don’t think anyone’s surprised that there was a reaction. The problem is that the reaction violated the rules for that forum. You are not, I presume, suggesting that someone using snark validates any sort of response from the snarkee, right? If BlinkingDuck had told Marley to go fuck himself, would you object to a mod note? This is the same deal - further down on the spectrum of acceptability, but still on the other side of the line.
Also, was I the only one trying to figure out what Popeye’s arch-nemesis had to do with not knowing dates in WWII?
Wow, this is bizarre. It seems fairly obvious to me, I’m surprised at the level of exchange.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Animal House, and didn’t understand the reference at all. I can tell from reading it is pretty heavy snark, and to me is seems a little out of place, given that the person making the statement didn’t actually cite dates, and further the remark citing 1948 as the last time Republicans got this big of gains was fairly unsourced, so basically it did feel a bit of a dick move to jump on Blinking Duck so hard.
That said, it was not across the line of personal insults that “asshat” clearly is. Snarking in return would have been fine, dropping an “asshat” - even if that is mild to some people - is still over the line.
And a Warning wasn’t even dropped - just a note to remind the poster his response was not appropriate for the forum.
Plus, Marley23 even apologized if the remark was taken more harshly than he intended. And he didn’t have to be begged/strongarmed into it, or take three days to cough it up grudgingly.
I just don’t see where the outrage is coming from.
As far as this situation vs. the quoting a different movie in GQ situation, the two are not equivalent. The similarity of referring to a movie to drop a line of snark is not equivalent because the verbage of the lines dropped is to a different degree. Out of context reading of the lines gives a far different result. One is a direct insult (motherfucker), the other is an odd referent and a hint they didn’t pay enough attention in school or something (yeah, I’m with you on the Popeye).
