A Question of Great Importance: Help me pick a hairstyle

So, yesterday I discovered that the only time in the next month my hairdresser can fit me in is this morning at 11. I was expecting more lead time and thought I knew what I wanted, but now I don’t, and none of my girlfriends* are available for counselling. So I turn to you, SDMB, and hope that I get some opinions in the next couple hours.

This is what I look like: dead sober and slightly intoxicated, thus the messed up hair and crooked glasses. (Okay, so the intoxicated photo was the most recent one in which I didn’t look like a frightened squirrel or a sneezing bunny.) My face shape is basically oval, and I don’t have a big nose or prominent chin to disguise or anything. The only thing I’m really opposed to is Betty Page bangs or bangs along those lines. I have a pretty small face, and with heavy bangs, my face just swims in dark hair and is lost.

These are the two options that I’m looking at:

  1. The Tiny Fey

My hair’s a little bit finer than hers and I don’t have a personal hairstylist following me around, but we have the same texture/curliness factor. The drawback is that I’ve had haircuts similar to that before, and I have this longing for something different.

  1. Shorter

I haven’t had hair that short since I was five and insisted that my dad cut my hair because I hated the going to the salon – the ladies cooed over me and offered me candy I couldn’t eat. Dad put a mixing bowl on my head and trimmed around. I also have concerns that it might make me manly, though those concerns may be unfounded as I am still overtly feminine wearing a walrus moustache.

Suggestions? Criticisms? Wanna comment on my shallowness? I’m open to all takers.

[sub]*I asked one of my guy friends for an opinion once and this is how the conversation went:

“I like it when you do that thing. You know, that makes your hair big.”
“My hair big? What?”
“You know. frantic hand movements around his head And you use that brush with the holes in it and those red things.”
“You mean when I use the curlers and the blow dryer?”
“Yeah, that.”
“Yeah, I’m not going to do that every day.”
“Oh . . . it’s cool when you brush it, too.”[/sub]

Well, I’ll tell you this guy doesn’t really see any difference between Tina Fey’s hair and the 3 supposedly shorter cuts. But I do strongly endorse dresses of the style TF is wearing in the first photo.

Just wanted to make clear that whatever choice you make at this point, you can pretty much forget about most guys having strong preferences one way or another. We can usually distinguish between a buzz cut and braids, but anything between the two is pretty fungible.

Oh, I freely admit that any satisfaction that’s going to derived out of this experience is entirely mine. Well, and the stylist after I tip her.

I happen to like this one the best out of all of them. Maybe it’s because I don’t particularly think Tina Fey is all that attractive that turns me off in regard to her hairstyle. You, however, are quite pretty, and I think a slightly shorter style will give a little more lift to your hair at the roots.

I think you’re very attractive and your nose looks just fine. You do have a lot of forehead and, since you’re against bangs, I’d suggest something from the first three choices. You might take a bit off the length, but I wouldn’t go as short as your other three examples, but then I’m a guy, so ya’ gotta’ factor that in.

You are a beautiful woman, I think any of those hairstyles would look great. I am partial to Tina Fey #1. I think overall the curlier hairstyles would look the best.

That was my favorite short style, too. And I think that I should get something a little out of the ordinary before I start on my journey into the world of academia. But the Tina Fey cut is so much safer and in my comfort zone. And I admire her: smart, funny, usually has great hair. But I am not Tina Fey.

That’s very diplomatic of you, A.R. Cane. Thanks for the compliments.
The substantial cranial real estate is one of the few features I inherited from my mother, and straight bangs just make me look . . . not right. I can live with the forehead.

Many thanks to you, too, olivesmarch.

All right, guys, I think I’ve got an idea, but I’m going to print off a couple pictures and take them to the hairdresser’s with me for her final say. Usually pretty good at saying, “No, that’s going to make you look like vomit. Do this.”

And of course you’ll post an “after” pic, right?

Still waiting…

It isn’t too late to do your part to bring back the beehive.

D & R!

Of course. But you’ll have to wait until Monday, because I’m currently without digital camera, and Monday is when the new one arrives.

Antinor, if only you’d posted earlier! Alas, I do not have enough hair now to achieve even the daintiest of beehives. Of course, I really didn’t have enough before, so the point is kind of moot. Where will the poor bees winter now?

Okay, guys, there’s an after pic in the current Doper pic thread in MPSIMS on the fourth page, post #157. I went with a modified version of the pic nashiitashii liked.

It’s not done in the picture, just washed and air-dried. It gets quite a bit curlier when attacked with a diffuser and some product.

Be prepared to be asked out, a lot.

I was going to say keep it long but…wow. Good choice.

You look fantastic! I too was going to say that you looked great, why mess with the hair… but you look beautiful!

<sigh> I wish I had the guts to chop my hair again. It just never looks right, and I can never seem to find a stylist that will tell me, “this will look like vomit.”

Ha! I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks, everybody! I’m pretty happy with my decision and was glad for your input.

Perfect choice!

Looking good!

Help me out with the bonnet, please: how long might one take to make, and what events/activities do you do to show it off? Thanks!

I went to a Dickens ball this winter (a bunch of people get together to have a Victorian Christmas ball, basically), and the plan was to make the hat to wear during the day, but that ended up not working out. I also have plans to attend a Civil War or re-enactment or two this summer, if I get my day bodice done.

Also, if you’re me, you wear the hat while vaccuuming and singing along to Abba.

It took me a long time to make, because I set it down and picked it back up again over the course of several months. I probably spent 20 hours or more on it, all told. I built the frame and did a lot of handwork on it, though. If you were just to by a bonnet blank to trim, it would take far less time.

Ah! very cool. Re-enactments always look like a fun way to meet interesting folks, though how women tolerated so many layers of clothing in July is a mystery to me.

And yep, I can totally see dressing up to vacuum.

Thanks.
