Four questions plus an explanation of terms.

[ol]
[li]How old were you when you lost your virginity? By the definition you’ve posted, I guess I was 15. But I sort of question the definition. (See below.) I didn’t engage in voluntary heterosexual intercourse until I was past 18.[/li]
[li]What religion, if any, did you parents practice? My mother was/is Methodist. My father, who had been dead by a good handful of years by the time I engaged in any of this, was raised Southern Baptist, but was a non-church-going deist by the time I knew him. And my stepfather at the time of these activities was the sort of Southern Baptist who gives Southern Baptists a bad name.[/li][li]Did you believe the tenets of your parents’ faith at the time you lost your virginity? ** I did (and still do) believe in the tenets of my father’s faith. At the time I first engaged in sexual activity, I mostly believed in my mother’s.**[/li][li]What is your gender, sexual orientation, and approximate age? Female, heterosexual, age 40.[/ol]. [/li][/QUOTE]

I know this might only make sense inside my head, but I can see where anal sex might qualify as “losing one’s virginity,” especially for a homosexual or bisexual man, but hand-to-genital contact seems more akin to “getting to third base,” in the euphemistic shorthand of teenagers. I guess oral sex would have seemed like “third-and-nine-tenths base” to me, as a teenager. And what if one’s first orgasm in the company of one’s preferred gender was the result of other contact? (For example, either participant got his/her jollies as a result of breast contact? Or a foot massage? In other words, no direct contact of either reproductive organ.) Would that qualify, in the case of someone who prefers that sort of sexual contact? By your definition, a guy who had his first orgasm while copping a feel of a girl’s genitals would not be a “virgin.” The definition seems a bit liberal, to me…

To expand a bit on the question, though, I wonder how many people answering this poll were actually married by the time they lost their virginity?

  1. My parents are and were somewhere between nominally Anglican and agnostic. I am more occasionally-pondering atheist. I’m 22, female and bisexual.

I’m adding one small nitpick. I know it’s pretty well understood for most purposes, but it bugs me when people mix up denomination and religion. Oh, well, just a peeve of mine.
