A quick survey: What do you know about the Battle of Monmouth?

No clue. (I would have guessed Great Britain.)

Schooled in Iowa.

I’ve heard of Molly Pitcher, but I have no idea who she is.

I know nothing about it. I skipped right to the end of the thread, so I couldn’t cheat.

I had no idea there was a Battle in Monmouth.

Pittsburgh, PA

Without reading much of the thread, I will say that I’ve never heard of it. Sounds like something from Ireland or Scotland.

I went through Province of Ontario public and high school. I don’t remember much history from then, except History of Revolutions taught by Mr. Esler in grade 10. I’m fascinated by history, partly because of Mr Esler’s class, but that came later.

Edit: We had the American Revolution, the Chinese Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Russian Revolution in Mr Esler’s class. It was more about “how to you tell when a revolution is about to happen”-type stuff than just battles and dates.

We were studying the Chinese revolution when Mao died and the Gang of Four took power. Kinda made it real, having the news reports on the radio conected to what’s in your textbook…

And we were doing the Russian Revolution when Rah Rah Rasputin by Boney M was popular.

I can’t recall a thing about the Battle of Monmouth. Went to public school in Texas. (So–I may have learned something about it all those years ago. Now–nada.)

What do you know about the Battle of San Jacinto?

Never heard of it.

I attended separate schools (essentially public schools but run by Catholics) in the province of Ontario, and later earned a degree from Queen’s University.

This is not a competition. I strongly suspected it was a pretty obscure battle. I believe I am correct.

However, that was battle for Texan Independence led by Sam Houston. But I am a history buff. Maybe the final battle?

Jim

My second guess is that it’s a battle from Star Wars. Upon preview, I see that it’s apparently a real battle. Drat.

Off the top of my head I remembered it as a battle in the Revolutionary War, but no real details beyond that ( not even the future state it took place in ). However I’m quite sure I got that knowledge from either a college class in American history ( I had a couple ) or else my own reading on the subject.

While some of the details of the Civil War were discussed in my high school, I don’t believe the Revolutionary War was ever explored in any grade much beyond the very beginning and the very end.

Nursery School - Kindergarten = Dorchester, Mass. ( hey, you never know how early they start these days :stuck_out_tongue: ).

1rst - 2nd grade = NYC, NY

3rd - 4th grade = San Francisco, CA

5th - 7th grade = Ferndale, MI

8th - 12th grade = Alameda, CA

edited to add: all public schools

Did you learn about it in history class?
I don’t think so, but I did read about it in the school library (see below)

**
Can you please tell me what state or country you were in school in?**
New York State

**Do you remember any of the details of the Battle? **
It’s the Molly Pitcher battle, which I learned from those awesome Childhood of Famous Americans biography series books in my school library.

**Do you know which War it took place in? **
The Revolutionary War

Do you know what State the Battle of Monmouth took place in?
New Jersey, although I will add that I most likely only know that because I know where Monmouth County NJ is in the present day.

I don’t know, but I had a kickass meal at a pub called the Robin Hood Inn in Monmouth in England.

What do you know about the Battle of Monmouth? Umm… A Mon Calamari Cruiser was destroyed by the Empire, causing them to throw in with the Rebel Alliance?

Did you learn about it in history class? No

Can you please tell me what state or country you were in school in? Colorado

Do you remember any of the details of the Battle? Apparently not

**Do you know which War it took place in? ** Apparently not

Do you know what State the Battle of Monmouth took place in? State? Apparently not.

On preview - I guess I’ll have to look up Molly Pitcher, too.

I came in to say, “Molly Pitcher!”, but I’m clearly not the first. I should know more about the Battle of Monmouth than I do, having grown up there, and I know fourth and fifth grade was a lot of Jersey-specific history, though I only remember the stuff about the Lenni Lenape. I also used to drive by the battlefield on my way to work.

For the record, I went to K through 8th in Deal and high school in Red Bank, home of the Molly Pitcher Inn. And, Indistinguishable, I’m ashamed of you! Though I guess we can’t expect too much from someone from North Jersey.

Do other states teach about the California mission system, founded by Spanish missionaries about the same time the Revolutionary War was happening on the other coast? California school kids have an entire semester on it in the 4th or 5th grade out here.

I didn’t read the rest of the thread, so my answers are ‘fresh.’

Did you learn about it in history class? Not that I recall.

Can you please tell me what state or country you were in school in? California – San Diego for Elementary and Middle, Ukiah for High School.

Do you remember any of the details of the Battle? Well, it was during the Revolutionary War. The only other thing I know about it is that it is the battle in which the famous Molly Pitcher fought. Her husband was wounded and she manned his cannon for the remainder of the battle. Don’t remember if he (the husband) lived, and I don’t remember her (Molly’s) real name. Probably Mary, given the nickname, and she was called Molly ‘Pitcher’ because she brought water to the soldiers as they fought.

Do you know which War it took place in? See above.

Do you know what State the Battle of Monmouth took place in? Hmmm. Nope, I don’t remember that. One of the first 13, natch. Not Virginia, because I’ve lived here for years and they would’ve claimed her.

When I was a kid we had an old set of World Book Encyclopedia from the 1940s. Over the course of my childhood I read them pretty much cover to cover. The articles I really liked, I read many times. The article on Molly was one I really liked. I wish I still had those encyclopedia.

Complete with sugar-cube missions!

No, Illinois, no, yes, and yes.

I have 3 generations of sugar cube missions in my family. My mom went to grade school in Harbison Canyon (near San Diego) and made one; I made one in San Diego at Sequoia Elementary; then my kids made them at Rolling Hills Elementary.

Answering the OP without reading the thread.

No, I don’t believe it was mentioned in history class. Of course, getting US history in Massachusetts does tend to warp things. The Revolutionary War, for example, is all about the few skirmishes at the beginning of the war that happened in the Bay State, and then a few words about Ticonderoga, and Valley Forge. Then Yorktown and the Treaty of Paris.

Details? I’m actually impressed I’m willing to guess where it was, and when it happened. Sorry, no details here. If I had to guess, I’m beginning to get the impression that this was the battle where Molly Pitcher made her fame, but I won’t swear to that.

It was a battle in New Jersey, during the Revolutionary War. [/spoiler]

Brought up in New Jersey, so of course I kinow about the Revolutionary War battle (been by the battle site several times), and heard about Molly Pitcher (whose very existence is questioned, it turns out).

Pepper Mill was brought up even closer to the site, and knows about it.
