A quick survey: What do you know about the Battle of Monmouth?

I went to government schools, we never learned about it.

Did you learn about it in history class? I think so, since I knew about it before I moved to NJ. I’m pretty sure Morrison and Commager, which we used in high school, covered it.

Can you please tell me what state or country you were in school in?
New York.

Do you remember any of the details of the Battle?

Only that it was around the Battle of Princeton. I’ve read a bunch of books on the Revolutionary War, so that might have affected my answer.

Do you know which War it took place in?

Yes. Revolutionary War.

Do you know what State the Battle of Monmouth took place in?

Yup, NJ.

The first place I lived in NJ was Princeton, a bit north of the battlefield, though we went past it all the time. The second was Pennington, across the street from the church where some of the Hessians fled after the Battle of Trenton. I’ve been past the battlefield a couple of times, though never actually visited it. Graduated high school in 1969, when they taught.

For shelbo: we never learned about the missions in NY. I know about them now since my younger daughter went to school in CA starting at the 3rd grade, and since we live pretty close to Mission San Jose. I’ve been to Mission Santa Barbara also.

I did learn a little about it, I don’t remember the grade level, but it was before High School.

Everyone, thank you for the answers so far, I appreciate it.

Jess, if you ever make it to my neck of the woods, you will probably want to visit the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank, NJ.

Sadly, when I hear “Molly Pitcher,” I think “Service Area.” :dubious:

I may live here now, but I grew up on Long Island. I’ve certainly heard of the battle, and of course I knew it had to be in New Jersey. I also got the Revolutionary War part right, but I have no idea whether that was because I actually knew that or whether it was just a (literally) educated guess.

I don’t remember learning about it in grade school, but I don’t remember much history at all from grade school.

In order:

No.

California for elementary, secondary, and undergraduate studies, currently New York for graduate studies.

The chief item that comes to mind is that I had a relative who participated in the battle.

The American Revolution.

Monmouth County, which is in central New Jersey.

Gee, maybe I should open an Ask the Revolutionary War Expert thread.

Not a bad idea, but you might want to wait a week or two considering the current embarrassment of riches of “Ask The …” threads.

Same here. Oh, and schooled in Wisconsin.

Yes to all the questions in the OP, (although it was more mentioned than thoroughly studied).

Long ago in a Catholic school far, far away (from where I now live)–actually a college prep school in Detroit.

I have heard of it, but that’s it.

Public school, Montgomery County, MD

NYC, public school. Heard of the battle and the legend of Molly Pitcher, presented as fact. Have stopped at the rest stop.

Did you learn about it in history class? Yes. And we visited the battlefield at least twice that I can recall for school trips. And I went with some neighbors to a reenactment one year.

Can you please tell me what state or country you were in school in? New Jersey - Middlesex County. Monroe Township to be completely specific.

Do you remember any of the details of the Battle? Yes. I remember the date, but only because I realized it after planning my wedding. And of course the story of Molly Pitcher and that it was a battle during the Revolutionary War. Washington, redcoats, Valley Forge, blah, blah, blah.

Do you know which War it took place in? Umm, yep. See above.

Do you know what State the Battle of Monmouth took place in? Yes.

I know my husband was not familiar with it. About a year ago we went to visit Fort Point in San Francisco and on one wall they had a little blurb about women helping soldiers during some battles. I turned to him and said “Like Molly Pitcher.” And he just said “Who???” So I told him the story of ‘Molly Pitcher’ as I remembered it.

If I had tried to guess, I would have said it was a battle in the English Civil War. (I was probably thinking of the Battle of Marston Moor.) I’d heard of Molly Pitcher but didn’t associate her with any particular battle. And I went to school in New York where we don’t bother with the history of the little states.

I can second this as a NJ native. Never learned about the missions. I learned about them from having my children go to school here in CA.
And my husband growing up here, of course. I’ve only visited 3 so far, but hope to make it to the rest soon, I’ve become kind of fascinated by them.

OOhh – Santa Rosa! [waves!] How’s tricks there? I’m from Ukiah.

Heard of it, but I’m a military history buff.

Don’t recall details, but

New Jersey, American Revolutionary War.

edit: educated in mostly Virginia

Sailboat

Here in England we learnt about our Civil War, plus the Roman invasion in 44BC and the French invasion in 1066.

Monmouth is in Wales and we were never told about a battle there.

I probably did learn about it in 10th grade American history, but I don’t remember anything about it now. I went to high school in Pennsylvania.

Yes, you’re right–about My Local Battle. Here in Houston, we’re pretty close to the San Jacinto battle site.

I’ve rectified my ignorance of Your Local Battle. I had heard of Molly Pitcher–but she’s not exactly history, is she?

Now, now–we’re not supposed to point out that US public schools tend to teach state history–along with US history & a smattering about Those Other Places. The OP is a History Buff & most of us are ignorant!

I had a year of Texas History and a semester each of Texas Geography & Texas Government. So I learned about MY missions!

But I’ve studied up on the other US missions as an adult. And once spent an amazed hour in the graveyard of the Mission Dolores.
