I ran across this in my lunchtime reading:
“…but a librarian who isn’t obsessive probably isn’t a good librarian, and Adele Mundy was a very good librarian indeed.”
– David Drake, The Far Side of the Stars
I got a chuckle out of it, in no small part because it really does fit so many of the people with whom I studied library science.
At the risk of sounding like I’m plugging a product…
The first two books of David Drake’s with Adele Mundy as a major character are
With the Lightnings
and
Lt. Leary Commanding
Both are linked to free and complete copies of the books available online. I think they’re great fun, and well worth reading.

I also like Foskett’s Creed of a Librarian:

Actually, I think Pratchett put it best when the Librarian said:
“Oook.”
I think that covers it all clearly and concisely.
The three rules of the Librarians of Time and Space are:
- Silence;
- Books must be returned no later than the date last shown; and
- Do not interfere with the nature of causality.
