I’m not sure how to ask this delicately, so I’ll just cut to the chase.
I’ve noticed over the years that many lesbian women have wide, flat butts. 
I’m curious as to why. I asked my best friend and co-worker, a lesbian who fits the short hair, mannish clothes stereotype, and she knew immediately what I was talking about. In fact, she finished my question for me by saying “I know, flat butts”. She doesn’t know why, but agree’s that many do. Including herself. She’s so cool. I love her to death.
Anyway, I tried searching google, but got tons of porn. I wonder if there could be a genetic link. Could be, if one believes that some people are born homosexual as I do.
I hope no one takes offense at my curiosity.

IANALesbian (or even a woman!), but I think it’s because the ones you see are wearing baggy pants (or men’s pants). Imagine, if you will, a woman wearing baggy pants that are pulled down to the widest part of her hips. What you think is her butt (due to the placement of the pockets on the pants), is actually just the flat, saggy, part of her pants. If they were to pull their pants up, they would have nice round bootys.
Of course, another theory is just that they have big thighs, which makes their butt stick out less.
I have never heard of or noticed this before, and a mental review of the behinds of the lesbians I know (admittedly not the most unpleasant mental task I’ve ever performed!) failed to confirm your claim. I do not believe there is any correlation, although it is possible that lesbians in general do not devote the same amount of time and effort to improving or disguising the shape of their behinds as straight women.
bwahhahaha, me and my girlfriend call this “dyke-ass” and pray each day that we will be spared from it! Its basically somone having a wide ass, or a combo of fat thighs and hips.
We have noticed it, but on the other hand, now that I think about it, I would guess that if I took a random sampling of women I would see it there too… I don’t spend much time checking out straight womens asses… ACK now it sounds like I spend my time checking out my friends asses… gets back on track
Yeah, it exists, but I don’t know how specific it is to just dykes, I know more lesbians who are not pear-shaped than I do who are. I am not entirely sure I am not noticing it because I noticed it (if you follow me). Like if you break your leg suddenly you see people with broken legs everywhere, or when somone you know gets pregnant and suddenly there are pregnant women everywhere…

That’s what my friend called it too. I wasn’t about to say it here, for fear of getting knocked (verbally) on my fat ass.
You could have a point there, Iteki(actually). Maybe it’s just more noticeable when seen in combination with short, spikey hair and flannel shirts.

Hummm… I’m notorious for checking out womens butts (mens too for that matter). I haven’t really noticed that lesbians have flat butts. I’ll try to pay more attention over the next few weeks and see. 
(honestly honey, I’m doing research for the SDMB. I needed to check out that woman’s ass)
In the meantime… Like the other posters said, maybe it’s an illusion from wearing mens clothing. Or you just notice it more. Or the folks in your area just don’t give a damn about working out to BunsOfSteel.
I don’t know if I’d let my eyes linger there too long, Theios. You might find the ire of your honey to be the least of your problems.

I’ve never noticed that. FWIW, lesbians are a bit more likely to be obese than straight women.

A friend of mine and several of her friends (all of whom are lesbians with “dyke ass”) have a part-time construction business called “BroadAss Construction Co., Ltd.”
Usually I pick out lesbians by listening to their “ear sounds”.
This is slightly off-topic but twin studies indicate that genetics can not be the sole determining factor as identical twins are both homosexual less than half the time. Maybe their is a genetic/environmental combo that causes both lesbianism and flat bums.
BTW I hear that flat bums are a common Native American womens’ complaint: ’ First Nations people have we call Bannock ass,or flat bum," she says. “Why we all have flat bums is one of the questions I asked [myself].” '. However complications set in, the author is a Lesbian-Native american.

I actually like this look in other dykes and am disappointed that IMO, I’m too curvy to manage it. I think the issue might be the men’s clothing—trouble is, even wearing men’s clothing doesn’t quite do it for me. Clearly, what I need is for all of you to visit and make an assessment of my ass and then figure out what can be done to rectify it.
Maybe I swim too much to have a flat ass.
I’m going to have to go with the different clothing theory. Alot of girls pick out pants in direct accordance with how they’re going to make their ass look. Lesbians are probably more likely to either avoid this purposely or simply go for comfort. I’ve checked out alot of asses over the years and I definately think that sometimes the pants make the ass more than the ass makes the ass.

I am going to have to be troublesom now and disagree with the clothing issue. Or at least the part about mens clothing. The specific women I am thinking of don’t wear guys clothes, I mean maybe the odd sweater or pair of jeans or whatever, but not regular pants, and these women wear mainly regular pants…
I would however wager a WAG and say that of all the women I know who fall into the dyke-ass category (the more I think about this they are actually fewer than I thought…) all have sedentary lifestyles. They drive everywhere and have office jobs. Most of the other dykes I know also have office jobs, but less sedantary lifestyles. I have no job, a sedantary lifestyle and no dyke-ass (STILL!! Touch wood!)
