I have sympathy for Aldebaran. I, too, am a practicing moron. However, at least I’m not self-righteous, and at least I know that GD is waaaay out of my league, most of the time.

One thing out of the thousand paper cuts of annoyance the guy gave me (pretty much given up on him now) was his coy refusal to say what nation he was posting from, which is sort of pertinent because he’s obviously been fed a long line of bullshit about the US and I’d like to know what sort of weirdo education he got and what sort of state propaganda he’s been hearing. I like to kid that he’s a Saudi or a bored Belgian teenager–that usually gets a protest out of him. Although I’m starting to think he really is a Saudi , since he seems to be a ‘scholar’ who can’t perform the most basic research and yet doesn’t seem to have any visible means of support, while maintaining two wives and a daughter, a stable of horses, etc. etc. That’s why he might be a Muslim teenager trapped in an immigrant ghetto somewhere in Europe–sounds more like a fantasy of a life of an Arab scholar than a real one.
But when he smears me and mine so recklessly, impervious to logic or gentility and dispensing personal insults in GD like they were Pez, he loses all sympathy I might have and I find myself treated his more measured posts lately with a lot of skepticism. Too little too late, bud.
I don’t believe he has ever been hesitant to state that he lives in Belgium…
I love his claims of dsylexia as the reason for his continued use of US’ers. He goes on to post completely readable posts, but insists on US’ers, always. I think it’s a new thing called situational dsylexia. Further evidence of this malady can be found in the linked GD thread, where, in his replies to Administrator Gaudere (in the wrong forum no less), he lapses into disjointed spelling and grammar, as if to show the language/dyslexia barrier prevents him from following GD rules.
He’s a dickhead who is only out to yank our collective chains.

I think this is the greatest drawback to his continued membership on the Dope.
It is far too easy to conclude that the only reason any of the rest of the world hates the USA is because they are mindless fanatics. And good old Aldebaran reinforces that with every post.
There is simply no reasoning with some people. And if the Middle East is populated by any significant number of obsessively anti-US broken record thinkers like our pal, we lose any inclination to examine our motives. Whether our cause is right or wrong, they won’t like it. So why bother worrying about it?
And that would be a pity. Because we owe it to the world to justify ourselves, and we shouldn’t be discouraged from that by the moral midgets who have their PCs on an endless loop of “US-ers are evil” posts.

It is interesting to figure out just exactly what is so annoying about this putz.
I think it is the combination of his total lack of interest in honest debate (which to me includes a real interest in understanding the other side’s POV, if only to intelligently discount it) and the dishonest predictability of his responses: (please note, these are not claimed to be exact quotes, just the flavor)
“You can’t understand my culture. You disrespect my culture. I should be allowed to have behaviors and beliefs that are reprensible because it is part of my culture. And you are stupid for not being able to understand my posts.”
“I never heard of that because I am not of your culture.” (Even though he usually references the same material or concept earlier or soon after in the thread proving that he uses ignorance like my kids use not being to hear me calling them … selectively for an excuse. He accuses someone of having an “agenda” and several posts later, when someone mentions that he appears to have an agenda claims not to know what that word means in English. Says he doesn’t know of Mel Gibson then a few posts later mentions various Gibson movies that he’s seen. And often paired with how well he knows our culture because he is of both.
“Thank you.” Yeah that smug arrogant thank you from someone who has proven that he has nothing to be smug or arrogant about.
Hell, I respect and look forward to reading the posts of many with POVs ananthema to my own. They force me to examine why I believe what I do and to either justify it, or, on occasion, to modify it. Just discussing subjects with like-minded others is no fun. I just skip his posts now though, or at least try hard to refrain from responding to his crap. Not worth the effort.
IMO Aldebaran’s presence does nothing to fight ignorance. If we want to hear the opinions of the “Hostile Middle Easterner” demographic, I believe we can find that without Alde’s help.
The problem isn’t that he’s an idiot, it’s that he’s an idiot who doesn’t want to listen or speak respectfully to others, thereby making him, for SDMB purposes, useless.

Oh, I think it might be smug, self satisfied approach he takes with anyone who opposes his particularly stunted view of issues. Well that and the farcical self effacing humility as he points out again, what a stunning brilliant mind he has and how his instructors tore their beards out at his radically skillful debating skills. That, and I have yet to see he admit is any way shape or form that he:
a) was wrong
b) has developed an understanding of the opposing view.
On the upside as a non-US’er he can’t use that on me. I can only hope that bothers him to a small extent.

Yeah, he’s an obstinate, intractable dickhead, but he’s our obstinate, intractable dickhead. I’ll agree that he’s cleaned up his act since his early days (like the time he got into high dudgeon when I referred to a “dog-pile”), and he still has a loooong way to go, but I would miss him. He provides some serious counterweight to many a thread, despite his roughshod “debating” style, and has raised some very good points that others have missed, or would rather avoid.
Never thought I’d say this, but ** Aldeberan**, I salute you!
It’s a uniquely Australian invention that fisherman use to get “bait crayfish” when fishing at the beach. They’re usually made of stainless steel and are about 3 feet long and maybe 2 inches wide. They work somewhat similarly to a large bike pump with one open end. The operator shoves the open end into the beach at the waterline and retracts the pump handle and dumps the sand and contents onto the beach. Often, you’ll get small crayfish called yabby’s which are perfect for bait on surf tackle. It’s important to use your yabby pump on the waterline so that the surf disseminates the contents immediately and in doing so, you’re being kind to the ecology etc.
