Sam’s not a pathological liar, who lies about trivial shit for fun. I knew one of them once. Well, either I knew one of them, or I knew a world-class mercenary and secret agent who was also the youngest person ever to fly a fighter jet at the age of fourteen.
But I also don’t think he’s a deliberate liar, who knows the truth and deliberately says false things. At least, he doesn’t do that any more than most folks, in my experience.
What he is, is a cavalier and ideological and petulant liar. When it comes to facts, he’ll say shit without any level of skepticism, if it supports his prevailing ideology. When it comes to cites, he’ll cite shit with only the most cursory of glimpses to see whether it backs him up or not. When he gets called on it, he gets snitty and snooty, simultaneously insisting that the cite he misrepresented still backs him up, and that people are being mean for calling him on his misbehavior.
His space pictures are lovely and don’t offer any support to his ideological position, and lying about them would be very deliberate. That’s not who he is.
But if he tells you Elon Musk knows something about space engines and cites it, you better read the cite yourself.
