I’ve watched the Extended Version of FOTR twice, when something occured to me. Doubtless this has already been explained away and I missed it, but I’m gonna ask anyway:
After the wizard fight, Saruman has Gandalf’s staff. Later, when he’s talking with Gandalf on top of the tower, he only has his own. Gandalf escapes on the eagle. He’s telling Frodo all about this while he’s at Elrond’s, where he has his staff back.
When did he get it back? I’m assuming Saruman didn’t give it back as a remembrance of old times. Did he have a backup at Elrond’s house?
He made a new one. You can actually tell it’s a different one if you look closely.
Thanks, Tremmie. You know…five seconds after the OP, I realized that that had to be the case, or something like that. I felt so damn clever…arrgh. Still, I guess there really wasn’t a way to explain him getting the first one back. I wonder how long it takes him to make a new one. Does it mention it in the book?
I’m not entirely sure about it as i haven’t read that part in the books in a while, but as far as i know he doesn’t lose his staff at all. There is no big Saruman/Gandalf fight in the book, Saruman just imprisons Gandalf and he doesn’t resist so he likely kept his staff the whole time.
