A small trivia quiz

Feb 3, 1959

The day the music died. The death of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens.

As anyone in show business will tell you, the show must go on. The show Holly was scheduled to play still went on. It allowed an unknown (at the time)singer to make his start in big time show biz. This entertainer went on to chart 38 songs. Who is this entertainer that got his start because Buddy Holly died? The Lord does work in mysterious ways.

Extra credit. Name the only #1 hit this entertainer had.

Dion?

Good guess…

but no.

Was it Fabian?

Again a good guess…

need a hint?

First name rhymes with lobby.

Um…Bobby Vinton?

Close! Even got the first letter of the last name right.

Hmm…the only other Bobby V I can think of is Bobby Vee…

I knew as soon as I posted that it wasn’t Vinton, because I’m sure he’s had more than one #1 hit

And the only Bobby Vee song I can think of is “Take Good Care of My Baby”, which will be stuck in my head all night now.

Zulu…

Kudos!

Plus you got the extra credit!

His biggest hit besides Take good care of my baby was

Devil or Angel.

Woohoo! Do I win anything?

I’m madly in love with Buddy Holly, actually. Adults are always surprised that I even know who he is (I’m 19). With good reason…I’m one of the few people in my peer group I know who doesn’t think that Buddy Holly is just the name of a Weezer song

It was band, not a solo act, that filled in for the unexpeced absence in Fargo, ND in 1959. “The Shadows” was a group formed by local Fargo boy Bobby Vee, also the lead singer. The Shadows recorded for Soma and went nowhere. As “Bobby Vee and the Shadows” they charted on Liberty Records in 1959 with Suzy Baby.

Vee started his solo career with Devil or Angel, which went all the way to number six in 1960. He hit #1 the following year with Take Good Care of My Baby.

Bobby Vee had a number of subsequent top five hits, although he never went all the way top the top again. Run to Him was #2 in 1961, The Night Has a Thousand Eyes hit #3 in 1962, and Come Back When You Grow Up was a #3 hit in 1967.

Um… no.

I posted without reading other responses… but as you’ll see from my post above, Devil or Angel, which spent 19 weeks on Billboard’s Hot Hundred chart, peaked at #6 August 1st, 1960.

Run to Him peaked at #2 11/13/61. The Night Has a Thousand Eyes hit #3 on 12/8/62, and Come Back When You Grow Up peaked at #3 7/22/67.
