A smokey proposition

Even without inhaling, I’d still have to breathe and that amount of smoke would probably make me very uncomfortable by triggering my asthma. I don’t need the money that badly.

More importantly, I don’t want to be part of a marketing campaign for the tobacco industry. It’s just not something I want to encourage.

It would take something on the order of him pointing a gun at my head to make me smoke - and he’d better hope I don’t get hold of that gun. Smoking killed most of the members of my immediate family. I oppose outlawing smoking because history shows how disastrous that sort of prohibition is; but give me a legitimate chance to kill one of the monsters involved in the industry, and I’d cheerfully kill him.

Former smoker here. I’d do it.

Each time I have quit smoking (3x), I have done it out of pure will. I just decided that I don’t want to smoke anymore. Each time lasted over three years each (going on 2 yrs this time). But I think I could handle 10 ciggies. It’s not like I couldn’t do it again. (Quit, that is).

Besides, I could really use the $1000 bucks.

Even one smoke and I’d be right back at it, so no, not taking the offer.

I’m a non-smoker, but I grew up with two parents who smoked like chimneys, and I spent years working in bars. I barely notice secondhand smoke until it presents a visibility hazard. I’ve smoked a couple cigarettes over the years just to see what the fuss is about, and while it isn’t at all pleasant for me*, I could quite easily complete this challenge.

I’ll take the deal, no sweat. Like others have said, health-wise, it probably beats a week in LA.

*The worst part was always the day after. My throat felt like it was coated in spackle, and everything I ate tasted like fire-roasted dog shit. Never did understand why anyone would do it long enough to get hooked in the first place.

No way. I grew up with both parents smoking, and I developed a strong aversion to it. (It’s the main reason I never tried pot when I had the chance.) If the offer were $100,000 it would still be really easy to turn down.

I’ll admit that $1,000,000 would make for a more difficult decision.

I’d take it. I haven’t smoked in over 30 years, but 10 cigarettes are no big deal.

Non smoker; I’d do it in a heartbeat.

In fact I’ve done far worse for far less as a normal control in clinical studies.

Hell yes I’d do it! I used to smoke (mostly socially) and never got hooked and when it was time to quit, I just quit - that was in 1998.

So yeah, bring it on, Panda needs a vacation

I have smoked two cigarettes in my life and while I didn’t get hooked, I have felt the urge every now and then (say once a year). I could do it and would do it cause unlike a lot of other people on here, $1,000 is a lot to me. I need the money.

I would do it if I didn’t have to inhale. Otherwise, I don’t think I could get through it.

Should have clarified; our wealthy tycoon is going with this definition of smoking, that is; “Smoking is the inhalation of the smoke of burning tobacco encased in cigarettes, pipes, and cigars.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has asserted that cigarettes and smokeless tobacco should be considered nicotine delivery devices. Nicotine, the active ingredient in tobacco, is inhaled into the lungs, where most of it stays. The rest passes into the bloodstream, reaching the brain in about 10 seconds and dispersing throughout the body in about 20 seconds.”

As for why he’s offering only no more than a grand; since he’s got a wacky marketing scheme you’re not the only one he’s approaching and he’s not made of money, and any more (a million) would be a no-brainer.

PLEASE tell me you’re making this offer because I will take you up on it without hesitation. I would smoke them all in one day, one after another, and in a week I’d have rent and utility money for the month.

And I’d have EARNED it!

(ex-smoker for 22 years and I’m confident I wouldn’t have any problem putting them away when I am done)

Let’s just say that there are a LOT of things I would put in my mouth for $1,000…

I don’t think the money would be worth it to me for several reasons:

  • My brother went through a fair bit of trouble and pain to kick the nicotene habit. I don’t think that ten Marlboros would get me hooked, but why take a chance?
  • If not, the chances are high that it would be a really unpleasant experience to have to smoke those cigs anyway.
  • As corkboard mentioned, I want to not be a part of promoting that industry.

I smoked for 25 years before quitting six years ago.

Hell. Yeah. I could spend a weekend boozing it up with my friends, smoke down five on Friday and five on Saturday, and then chalk that “wow I feel like shit” feeling to the fact that I just boozed away a weekend. But the $800 profit in my pocket (hey, I drank a lot that weekend, whaddayawant?) would be sweet. And no, I would not keep smoking.

Ex smoker. It’s a deal. Feel confident a packer wouldn’t make me re-start. I smoked a lot for about ten years, but strangely didn’t find quitting very hard at all.

I haven’t smoked in over 20 years. I need the money. I’d chance it.

I’d probably be willing to smoke ten cigarettes in an hour for only $100…get me drunk enough, and that will probably drop down to $10! :stuck_out_tongue:

So a whole week and $1000? You bet your ass.

I’ve smoked maybe half a dozen in my life, and several cigars, so I know they don’t make me nauseous or anything. There really isn’t any danger in a non-smoker becoming addicted in a measly ten cigarettes in a week, and I have no family history of lung cancer, so cough (heh) up that dough, buddy!

Non-smoker, voted no. I’m not worried about getting addicted–I don’t believe one pack over a week would pose much risk of that. I just don’t participate in marketing campaigns for deadly products.
