So it looks like the NHL lockout goes on. I’m gonna fill my free time with minor league hockey, TV, and maybe some dating:D. Heck, my tailgate group is tailgating for Opening Night Friday, even if the game is cancelled. What would you do if you couldn’t do your favorite hobby? Discuss. Or hijack, I don’t care.
I don’t have any hobbies except maybe surfing the next and posting on Facebook and message boards. If I couldn’t do that I would probably just watch more TV. LOL
I’m boring.
Well, I’m on a limited budget these days, living in limited space with most of my stuff in storage, so I’m up to about 1,000 hours in Skyrim now.
Really really really looking forward to getting an apartment a few months down the road so I can get back into cooking, leatherworking, playing the recorder, exercising, going to SCA events, and living in more than 120 square feet of space.
I actually have a serious answer to this. And I’m not looking for hugs or sympathy, but it has been an interesting sort of thing to think about. I shared all of my favorite things with Dave, even up to and including the things that we were collectively interested in which led to our vacation which ended one day before he passed away. And I have to tell you but there is no damn way at this point that I want to pursue my previous hobbies and interests anymore.
What to do?
I don’t actually know what to do sometimes. I have decided to continue volunteering at a museum that was only marginally involved in my hobby. And it even took me a couple of months to figure out how to separate the two out. But luckily for me they’re having a Halloween party and I love getting dressed up so that was enough to push me in their favor. Otherwise, I’ve been spending time with the HFUNs and hopefully will be hanging out just with their daughters more often. I am kinda grateful that school and ‘work’ are so busy right now.
And on that note I think it’s time for bed. Hopefully tomorrow will be an ok day and doggio will repent for his great wickedness.
Sticks, I haven’t looked at it much to see how searchable it is, but you might take a look at meetup.com and see if you find new things to do there. People I know (some of them on the SDMB…) have had good luck with it.
Well, I’m finally getting back into my hobbies. The stress and strain of re-establishing my life here in Dallas has kept me so tired, I really haven’t had the energy to do my happy stuff. The most I could manage was some reading and a tiny bit of writing.
Friday, I went to a Drawing/Painting Meet-Up and came home with a nice little portrait. It’s got some issues, but overall, I think I did a decent job. I also showed a new visitor at church around our community garden. Last week, I put lettuce and spinach seeds in the ground for the cooler weather. We’ll see how that goes.
If I had to start from scratch? Probably music. That is, I’d learn to play an instrument (other than the bass clarinet), and find a scratch band I could participate in.
Lead a boring life & be fat (two of them are sports that I compete in). I don’t go on ‘normal’ lie-on-a-beach vacations, but the cumulative week I’ve spent in a hotel in each of the past two years has been for some competition of another. I was away this weekend for a race. New Ing-land (Connect-i-cut) is in peak leaf colors now & is real purrrdy. (though it is hard to look at them for more than a second or two at a time when you’re driving greater than a mile a minute)
I rented a car as I figured the better gas mileage would offset some of the cost, so there was not point in beating up my car for a net of $10 or $15. I got a Toyodor Corolla. There are two main circular gauges in the instrument panel, a tach & a speedo. The dashboard curves around them in an arc identical to & hidden by the steering wheel…except for between them where the dash dips down a little, allowing a little bit of light to peek thru under the steering wheel. I know this car’s female, because it was showing some cleavage! Moooommm, since I was traveling, I didn’t get to respond to your post in last week’s (this week’s? - it’s still Sun) MMP. If doggio says Hockey Lady has toys that go Buzzzzzzz, clearly she likes pushing the button that ends the period in the arena. :dubious:
Speaking of getting back into cooking, I hear that recipes are appreciated here. And chocolate. I present both, in my great-aunt Lola’s recipe for fudge cake.
Aunt Lola’s Fudge Cake
4 tbsp shortening
2 c sugar
2 eggs
4 sq unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 3/4 cup flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 c milk
1 c chopped nuts
1 tsp vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Prepare pans.
Sift together flour, salt & baking powder.
In a large bowl, combine shortening & sugar. Add eggs, 1 at a time. Add chocolate. Add milk & flour mix, 1/3 at a time each, alternating. Add vanilla. Add nuts.
Pour into pans.
Bake 40-45 minutes. Keep an eye on it for the last 5-10 minutes as this cake scorches easily.
We had Italian Beef sandwiches with french fries for dinner tonight (Sunday), and it was delicious! So easy to make, and so good tasting, it’s a win-win.
I haven’t been watching much sports programming since I retired, believe it or not. I didn’t even watch as much of the Olympics as I usually do, but then again the coverage was just super boring to me. I do have hobbies that I could be doing instead, like crocheting and reading, and in fact I have started crocheting again. I want to try to learn how to crochet by printed instructions but so far have not had much luck with that. There is something about the abbreviations used that my brain just can’t seem to deal with! I have, however, started to gain some sort of control over tension in my crochet stitches (YAY!), that was a huge hurdle for me ::knock on wood:: I hope that it hasn’t been a fluke!
That fudge cake looks really rich and good, but I think I’m going to try to make the pound cake I’ve been craving. Thanks for the recipe, Ethilrist.
Morning, Mumpers! How can it be Monday already? Who stole my weekend?
Nice OP, doggio - I don’t have much in the way of hobbies but I think if I couldn’t do stuff, I’d most likely waste a lot more time faffing about on the internet. Most days I barely look at “social” stuff because I’m too busy doing other things. Of course, I could always try finding time to do more social things anyway, or maybe just veg out on the sofa with one of the pile of good books I’ve got upstairs in the “to be read” heap.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. YAWN 'Tis a loverly 49 Amurrkin out with a predicted high of 82 and dry, dry, dry. Wish it would rain already. We need some.
Nice OP doggio! I don’t have any what folks call hobby unless y’all count OYKW and surfin’ the net.
StickyBuns who knows, maybe one day you’ll feel like pursuin’ your hobbies again. Give it time. Anyways you got us to hang out with and that’s always entertainment elbow sex and all.
That cake sounds yummy Ethi! We’ll work on a nickname.
Now I need more caffiene and rumbly tummy wants food. Then, alas, ‘tis Monday so irk purtification must commence. No PTB hangin’ around this week, so YAY!
I may be weird (no comments from the peanut gallery!!!) but I don’t have many “favorites.” I like some TV, but no single show to the exclusion of the rest. I like a variety of books/genres, but no one work stands out. Same for music, performers, artists, and on and on. So while I have a lot of interests, I don’t have a favorite hobby per se.
If I couldn’t play with clay any longer, I’d look for another creative outlet - maybe I’d learn to draw or paint? If I lost access to Teh Intrarwebz, I’d probably read a lot more. I might even spend more time outside getting fresh air and sunshine!
But I don’t do elbow sex and I’m mortified that it’s been brought up here. Have you people no dignity or decorum???
Yeah, right, look who I’m asking!
Happy Monday!! Oh, and the fudge cake looks decadent and delicious - I may be forced to try it.
I think the first inkling that today will not be a good one is the fact that when I made brekkies in the coffee room here at the orifice, I nuked the cottage cheese I brought for lunch thinking it was my scrambled aigs. :smack:
Yes, thank you. I have joined a couple of meetup groups in the past and I’ll probably look to that in the future when the craziness of this semester subsides.
I’m up and sitting here while 24 potatoes are in the oven [del]stinking up the house[/del] baking merrily away. Baked potato bar for lunch delivery and then I’ll come back and work on my study task for the day.
I just checked and at least 3 of the 5 of my group have now contributed to the group project, so that’s a good sign. The other 2 have until about 5 p.m.
