A suggestion about the moderation going forward

If so many women are expressing a disdain for this place then why not get more women and (and men who champion women) as moderators.

I mean seriously, who here does not have a mom? (Whether living or dead) That they do not love? Who here does not have a sister that they love? Who here does not have a daughter that they love?

I have all three. And I thank the universe everyday for them. Because my life is so much better and richer because of them.

In this era of acceptance of all people as equals, except, the trolls and willfully ignorant, I think it would be a good idea to make Manda Jo, **iiiandyiiii **(I think I got that right, I love you bro. Your patience is admirable.) and BigT mods. Plus at least half of the mods should be ladies. We need a good balance here of perspective. Manda Jo has spent so much time and energy explaining why things are hurtful to her in so many threads. Even when the SDMB doesn’t change. (I would have given up a long time ago.) I admire her fortitude. iiiandyiiii has the patience of an angel to explain things (to people who obviously are trolls who are just trolling for the lols) and BigT has his thumb on the right way to look at things.

I know some of you may discount my words because of things I have said in the past.

And that is fair. In the past I have been a stupid face. And I regret some of the stupid and mean things I have said on this board in the past. And I wish to apologize to everyone that I have said mean things to. Mostly BigT and Czarcasm, as they are still here.

But I have read many of BigT’s posts about the moderation that has gone on, on this board and I find myself agreeing with him 99% of the time.

And iiandtiiio (ok, that was a meaningfull playfull mess up of his name because so many people do it) is just so patient and willing to explain his positions and where his thought are on a subject.

And to to trolls, I will not respond to you. And you trolls will make yourselves obvious to everyone, even if the mods do nothing about your trolling.

Sure, if you want to live in an episode of Andy Griffith.

The general idea seems like a good one, even if most the specific recommendations are questionable and would likely come to be regretted. I think it would be nice to see iiiandyiii and perhaps Helena330 elevated to the Pantheon.

I’d vote “No” on affirmative action / diversity hires for mods, if this sort of thing is now up for a vote.

I was kind of on the fence, but this clears things up. More women moderators would clearly be the smart and right thing to do.

I think it’d be a good thing; a female moderator has had life experiences, and a viewpoint, that a male simply cannot have.

That formulation (a ____ moderator has had life experiences, and a viewpoint, that a ______ simply cannot have) could be used to support inclusion of just about every imaginable demographic: Christians / atheists, right-wingers / leftists, rural / city-dwellers, Asians / Latinos, non-Americans / Americans, etc. I’d rather the administration focus on assembling a collection of intelligent mods who fairly apply the rules, and less on their demographic background.

Personally I’d encourage the elevation of all of those mentioned, if for no other reason than that I believe they’d take a harsher line on some of the more noxious and misogynostic trolls in our midst.

What a very nice thing to say, Drunky! Thank you. Even if you didn’t quite get the number of i’s right (2, then andy, then 4).

Crusaders make the worst moderators.

…you don’t think female moderators are intelligent and you think they would not fairly apply the rules?

I feel like we could do a lot worse than having mods who actually care about shit.

Let’s get back twickster. And let’s not forget our esteemed Tuba Diva. Both women, and both even-handed in moderation and administration. And isn’t Karen Lingel a member of the SDSAB? I think Una Persson is too. Eve may not post any more, but she will always be welcome; as will Eva Luna, Cat Whisperer,** EmilyG**, kambuckta, and Beckdarek. Among others.

We have many great women mods, admins, and members here. I’d like to see more.

I had a Mom, but she made it very difficult to love her, towards the end of her life. I won’t go into details, but when I got word that she died, I was more, “Thank God that’s over,” rather than, “Oh poor Mom; she’s dead.”

Like I said, don’t ask me for details. Suffice it to say that I shed no tears over my Mom’s passing.

Agreed, with the proviso that maybe these three should get a say in the matter :).

And can I go further and suggest that our most contentiously-modded fora – Great Debates and Elections – could use some diversity in the mod staff?

Jesus christ, no. Those people would be awful moderators. I have said a number of times that there should be some female moderators though.

Which ones would you approve of?

I’d like to go on record as saying I don’t want to be a moderator in any way, shape, or form. Having ONE thread I feel obligated to stay involved in has been driving me crazy.

I’m pretty sure we don’t get to vote.

That having been said, iiandyiiii is going to want the Charter Members to pay reparations because there aren’t any black mods, and I haven’t got that kind of cash lying around.

Regards,
Shodan

That’s hard to say because I think a good rule of thumb is someone who would make a good moderator is probably also someone who I haven’t quite noticed as much. Frankly, that could include Manda JO since I don’t really remember anything about her before this round of moderation debate. But I see she’s not accepting the nomination anyway.
