Anybody ever try this? It’s a cheapo meal-in-a-box. They basically provide the rice noodles and the pad thai sauce. You provide everything else (chopped peanuts, chicken, pork, or shrimp, scallions, egg, oil, cilantro.)
I’d almost say it’s a “stone soup” recipe, except that they don’t scrimp on the good stuff. The noodles are traditional and firm, yet tender. The sauce isn’t made with any weird preservatives, and it’s actually made with real palm sugar, tamarind, etc.
The whole thing is quick and darned tasty, and while it will never take the place of real pad thai, it’s a damned fine quick alternative…and the whole process (less the time it takes to soak the noodles. You need to heat up the oil anyhow.) takes less than 15 minutes.
Definitely worth the couple of bucks at the grocery store.
We get these all the time, just so that after a long day when both of us get home at 7:30 at night we can feel like we actually “cooked” dinner instead of just doing the frozen pizza thing again. I’ve been working for the last four years to get my girlfriend into the Thai thing, and this helps.
I pick these up by the case from Costco. Perfect portion size for me, the wife, and the little one. You can throw in just about any kind of protein & veggies that you have on hand, so there’s incredible variety.
This. and the peanut one, are freaking great. The boxes you throw in the microwave aren’t nearly as good, but it is still the closest I can get to Thai on any given day. My family isn’t really big on “culture,” and my mom goes so far as to say she “doesn’t eat Asian.” Yes, Asian is a food genre in my household.
The ‘Taste of Thai’ items I’ve tried have all been very good for instant food. Haven’t tried the Pad Thai yet, after this thread I’ll get some. Could be pretty healthy with vegies and Tofu added I expect (though I guess salt content will be high as is the case for many instant foods).
