A Thank You Note

There were some of you who did not have email addresses in your posts. Most of all, this OP is for each of you that I could not email personally and then for my other defenders as well. If you do not see your name on this list, please check your SDMB email boxes.

I deeply appreciate the support so many of you showed in the recent Pit thread directed against me. While the OP was entirely within his rights to post what he did, many others piled on with what was plainly mean-spirited and often flat-out cruel addenda.

I’ll not go into the thread’s explicit content or debate right vs. wrong. What I will do is express my gratitude that so many of you regarded what was happening as appalling and unkind. I am no Pollyanna and do not expect the world to be all hearts and flowers. At the same time I also refuse to be sadistic or vicious. The kind words that more than a few of you had meant a lot to me.

I know who I am and what sort of person I try to be. Many do not take the time to find out and I consider it to be their loss. More than a few posters here have made the effort to know me a little and I can only hope that each of you feel as rewarded as I do by your friendship. Below is a list of those I wish to thank openly for their kindness:

Again, while my hide is thick enough to withstand such slings and arrows, having the support of so many people made the nastiness a lot easier to bear. I’m sure I will always have my detractors in this world. I have throughout all of my remembered life. I couldn’t care less so long as there remain a few decent and honorable folk willing to give a bloke the benefit of the doubt.

I cannot tell you how honored I was to discover that so many people had come to my defense while I was away for the weekend. I can only wish that all of you had been at the artist’s fundraising party with me. Each and every one of you would have been welcomed with open arms by everybody involved. I feel gifted to have had so much love in my heart when I finally stumbled across the Pit thread. It made a rather impenetrable buffer against the blackmail, vituperation, and deceit I encountered there.

I will also repeat to Tony Barber’s Underwear, that he demonstrated impressive class to reenter the thread and apologize before requesting it be closed. Tony, you might just as easily have backed away in order to let me twist gently in the breeze. You did not and I respect that. Thank you. I look forward to friendlier interaction with you in the future.

To each and every single person who took the time to defend me, I give my deep and abiding thanks. It made it much easier to feel as though my efforts here have not been overlooked.

As I said before, I felt quite bad when I opened that other thread and read what I, and others had written. It is probably the first time that I realised that there is a real sense of community about this place.

From the responses in your defence, there are obviously people who you have affected, and who genuinely care about you here.

While I’m sure that we are very different people, I’m sure we can find something in common, and I’ll try not to fly off the handle if I see you post something that I disagree with.

I’m glad things cooled down. I guess I didn’t defend you enough to deserve an email ;)! I did, however, mention in the pit thread that you sounded just like my father! For a few heart-stopping moments I really thought my dad and I were on the same mb without eachother’s knowledge. I am now sure that you are not my father, thank goodness. If you are ever in Atlanta, drop me a line, I’d love for you and Dad to have drinks. You’ll either become best friends because you are so much alike, or kill one another since there can only be one true “master”!

Yes, I know your location says Silicon Valley, but that could have been Dad’s “location” for so many reasons.

What is nice about your thank you, is that several of us (including me) did not come out with 100% unqualified “He’s a SAINT” type support, and yet you, in a very mature fashion, accepted the minor barbs in the supportive spirit in which they were given.

Marconi & Schmeese, you were most definitely on the mailing list and I have resent to you as well. Hard to forget an Italian inventor being mutated into a Kraft blue box.

DrDeth, I am always open to constructive criticism. Yours was that and I had no problem with it. Since you are in my area, please email me so we can get together for a beer sometime. First round’s on me!

Ah, you’re welcome, ya big lug. :wink: I don’t appreciate vicious pile-ons like the one directed at you in that thread, and especially not when the person being attacked did nothing to warrant it.
