I have a Dremel.
I have a friend.
The friend has an extra long tooth.
Can I file his tooth down with a Dremel?
If not…
Why not?

Well, that’s pretty much what the orthodontist used to shape my teeth (I think his was air-powered, but it was a standard grinding bit), but I wouldn’t recommend doing it yourself. You might slip and grind down the wrong tooth, or poke out his eye, or something.
Also, wouldn’t that hurt like hell? Unless you’re planning on getting your friend drunk first or some other form of DIY anaesthesia?
Heh…thanks for the laugh
Just because the tooth is extra long doesn’t mean the nerve in the tooth stops where the other teeth do. You do realize that teeth have roots, nerves and blood in them. A small cavity or a chip can hurt like hell. It’s not like trimming your fingernails or getting a haircut. Once you get through the enamel on a tooth it gets real sensitive. How much you figure on grinding off?
I doubt you could grind off enough to even notice before his ass was screaming. BUT…
Sure you can grind it off. But I guarantee you it’s gonna hurt like a motherfucker. You better get some some damn good pain killers and antiseptic because if that tooth gets infected and abscesses. It is entirely possible that he could die.
Odds are you’d probably just shock the tooth and kill it anyway. Then you could just pull it out in a couple of weeks.
heh… thanks again
BTW Do you have any malpractice insurance, because you’re opening yourself up to one hell of a civil lawsuit and possibly criminal charges as well.
Mine was ground down for fitting a denture, no pain. But, you have to take into account that a dremal isn’t as fast as the dental instrument and the bits are a lot courser. You will get vibration and heat which will mean pain, but let us know how this works out.
Thanks all,
I asked because I had two of my front teeth ground down when I was younger ( picture a vampire)… there was no anesthetic used and it didnt hurt one bit.
Yes, I realize there are nerves and such associated with teeth…duh…
But as long as it doesn’t hurt and I wasn’t grinding away a pound or two, I dont see the harm in giving it a try.
Mainly just want to round out the tip so it isnt so obvious and pointy…
So wish us luck!!
PS. If Dentist didnt charge so much to walk through the door,we probably wouldn’t even have to consider doing it ourselves…
Didn’t really mean to talk down to ya, sorry. I have no idea how old you might have been some 13 yr. old w/out a clue.
Just wanted to make sure you’d looked at the possible negatives here. You’d be surprised at the rather obvious things that many people aren’t aware of.
I too had a tooth filed back smooth when I was a kid. The dentist explained it to me this way. Right now as a kid you are still growing, even your teeth. If I file it smooth and then even up the one beside it. (It got a corner knocked off) He said…if I file them both they will continue to grow for awhile yet and will barely be noticeable.
He was right, they both fell right into place and look great. But it did hurt when he ground the one that wasn’t too bad. The one that was nearly broke in half didn’t. But it had no feeling in it for several days. Due to the shock of impact the nerve went numb. Lucky it didn’t kill the tooth. I’ve seen it happen.
Now at 41…I’ve still got all my teeth. An occasional chip and the front teeth accident are the only problems I’ve had.
Been lucky never had a cavity.
Well, whatever y’all decide be careful. And I’d talk to a dentist first. Tell him what’s up and why. He/she might surprise you.
Good luck.

Thanks, I appreciated your post.
It was good that you DID mention all the negatives… just in case there are some young kids reading this…
and ANYONE attempting this SHOULD consider them all.
