*The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it. *
~ The Rubaiyat of [possibly] Omar Kayyam
Farewell, Col. Your insight, piety and wit will be missed.
But you cannot take back what you wrote as a petulant, insulting jerk.
*Goodbye 'lounsbury,
Though I hardly knew you at all,
You had the nerve to swear at folks
Who really knew fuck-all.
They crawled out of the woodwork
And talked shit on the S.D.M.B.
They made you cuss and got you
B.A.N.N.E.D.
And it seems to me
Your being kicked
Is more sinned against than sinned,
Irrascibility
Is annoying,
But you taught us things.
But you should have learned from last time:
GD’s rules are strict.
The patience ran out long before
Your knowledge ever did.*
Throwing him out for what happened is poor judgement and unintentionally hypocritical on at least two counts: fighting ignorance, which Collounsbury does better than anyone here on certain topics that need it quite badly; and by the sort of things tolerated from some other posters (in terms of insults but more importantly trolling/being a jerk/similar activities).
And here we go with yet another Collounsbury Pit Thread, where those who agree with his banning are accused of simply disagreeing with him.
I can say that I don’t know of a single issue in which I disagreed with him, but his debating “style” was simply inappropriate for anything but the pit, and judged against the board rules by the mods. As much as I like to have an intelligent person on board who happens to agree with much if not all my views, personal insults in what should be a debate often detracts from the arguments being put forth.
Boy, it sure didn’t take long for the Collounsbury sycophants to come crawling out of the woodwork, did it? No matter how knowlegable Colls is/was, and while I admit he did seem to know a bit about the ME, we should remember that the boards biggest proponent of Collunsubry’s expertise was Collunsbury himself, he proved again and again and again that he couldn’t follow the rules. If your neighbor was polite, helpful, kept his home clean, never had loud parties, was in all respects a model neighbor except for the fact that every night when he got home from work he pissed on your rose bushes, you’d prolly do something about that, wouldn’t you?
Seems I was dead on target. Anyone want stock tips?
Coll seemed to be a smart man too much in love with his own smarts. And that made him express himself arrogantly and derisively. And that’s a bad combination.
Far better instead to let the ignorant comments roll off you and continue to refute them reasonably than to become insulting or profane.
No. His petulant and insulting posts were written to witless, asinine ignoramuses.
That these simpletons were so moronically fatuous was no excuse.
A near incontinent lack of patience and positively adolescent inability to apply a modicum of self-control are the shibboleths of being a jerk.
I believe our only hope now is to ask that he be granted Pit access only, or something.
I am solidly on the fence about our latest banning. I am very hard to offend and have mastered the skill of not reading when someone is being an ass. I generally think this would be a poorer place if we banned those with whom we disagree.
That being said Coll was making an ass of himself in the linked thread. Alan Owes Bess was absolutely accurate in what he called Coll on. When it comes to his opinion Coll’s chief defense is the ‘because I live there and I know’ defense. I am a bit curious as why he is regarded by some as smarter than everyone else here. As an American I may have to use that blistering retort on Eurodopers with an opinion on America.
Throughout these threads there has been an assumption that Coll overstepped his bounds when dealing with ignorant posters. Implicit in this assumption is that Coll is always correct on the subject matter when he goes off, but he should learn to stamp out our ignorance in a more socially acceptable manner. More often I find he is rude when he simply disagrees with a perfectly reasonable poster who has a difference in opinion.
In a way I am sorry to see him go and wish we were better able to let his insults roll of our backs. Having followed his threads for some time now though, I can understand why some people have had enough.
Fat chance. I don’t think that the Admins are going to go out of their way to accomodate Coll. While I think that most of his targets richly deserved what they got from him, he definitely needed to tone it down in GD. Every time I saw him go off on someone up there, I winced because I knew it was one step closer to his being re-banned.
