A way to ease strain on the server - more selective searches

I don’t know, I usually go directly to a user’s profile. I almost NEVER go directly to the administration main page. Again, I don’t keep track of the stats very much at all. I know that stats fascinate some people, who will manipulate them endlessly, but I’d just as soon watch grass grow. Probably Jerry would know, but he hardly ever posts. The SDMB is very low on his priorities. He’s THE tech guy for the whole Chicago Reader, from what I understand.

…a good thing, too, because posting here feels just like that sometimes.
Zing! :stuck_out_tongue:

People usually do quote messages that they’re replying to, or else they happen to have first post, in which case you can’t blame the thread starter for still wanting to make changes. Why not just allow changes within a certain time period? I sure as hell notice my mistakes within a few minutes. Additionally, for all my thousands upon thousands of posts in some of the largest forums around, haven’t seen any controversy resulting from a changed post. Zero. Zilch. None.

vB code and writing are second nature to me, but the downside is that when I make a mistake, I neglect to go back and fix it. That’s assuming I even notice it; like many people, I have a tendency to read what should be there, not what actually is there. This drives me up that wall, but I guess you don’t intend to change a policy which has been around longer on this forum than I have. :o

Uh, that didn’t come out quite right. I neglect to fix it in the sense that I believe what I have written is correct, so the “assuming I even notice it” part doesn’t quite work. In both cases, I just don’t see the mistake until later, even with preview. I guess it has to do with the change of perspective you get upon seeing the post appear in the context of a thread.

This board is so busy, that the only acceptable edit window is zero. You know how after you submit a post, it takes you back to the thread? I’ve seen it happen that by the time I got back to the thread after posting, there was already a reply to the post I’d just made.

Besides, why do we need an edit feature? Most of the time, typos are no big deal, and in the rare case that they are a big deal, you can post a correction, or ask a mod to edit it for you.
