So, a blog is pompous, but making a whole new forum on a board with 80,000 members about the book you wrote about fixing up your house is modesty in motion? Gimme a break  Delete that dumbass barnburner forum or whatever the fuck it’s called and start a thread about it like anyone else would do. I might be excited about the book if it wasn’t plugged in such a pompous way. You introduced me to it and soured me on it at the same time.
The first username I ever had on these boards was Sartoris Snopes, the hero of Faulkner’s BARN BURNING. I wonder if it was prescience.
Meh. It’s [del]Ed’s[/del] Cecil’s board; he can do what he wants. Anything that drives up traffic to the boards is a good thing! (As long as the new hamsters are ready for it.)
I thought you were fucking about there, Cisco, but I see that nope, there really is a useless as tits on a boar hog forum there. Yeah, we had to weep and cry and beg for a fucking game forum, but Ed gets a vanity forum just for the asking? I see where the other 80K of us fit into the scheme of things. Thanks, PTB, for illlustrating it so vividly, thanks a fucking pantsload…
So when can I expect my fucking Knife Fight forum, eh?
Not to beat a dead horse, but isn’t the whole website a vanity forum for Ed? Never bothered anyone before.
I meant “Cecil.” A vanity forum for Cecil. There’s a difference. I’m sure of it.
Well, you can always get the book from your library and return to the forum to do a lengthy “review” on it
Oh, and we get it Alan, we get it. Cecil/Ed. Haw haw. We get it.
I read quite a few blogs, and few of them are about their author posting his “great thoughts,” most are about people sharing their interests and enthusiasms. Nothing pompous about them.
It is true that this board started around a single endeavor, “The Straight Dope” newspaper column. But it has evolved so far beyond that to become very much a general interest board. In that light, introducing a whole new forum around a single book seems to me to be the very height of vanity.
I had planned to remain a paying subscriber well into the future, in order to continue to experience the SDMB without the intrusion of flagrant advertisements. Perhaps I’ll see it differently in the light of day (I am only posting now because I was having trouble sleeping), but I am seriously considering leaving for good, in order to avoid the flagrant advertisement right smack dab in the middle of the main forum page.
It’s a frakking waste of time and space and energy for the hamsters to support a whole new forum to flog a stupid book. Being as I have the kind of house that might have made that book worth looking at I sure now won’t buy it.
It should have gone in a thread like MPSIMS, or the arts forum, possibly with a sticky. This way just looks, as another poster has said, “pompous”.
A sneaky way to get an ad in front of those who pay.
Thank you for putting this so well. That’s exactly how I think of the board. I couldn’t care less about “Cecil” and Ed and that stupid crap. When people talk about him like he’s real or call him “The Master” it makes me laugh and shake my head with pity. Yes, I know a lot of it is tongue-in-cheek but it’s still pathetic.
It’s a message board where people exchange ideas. I realize for some people it is a lot more than that, but for some of us… that’s it.
End of my hijack.
I will admit when I saw “The Barn House” I thought to myself, “Self, (yes, I call myself ‘self’) I didn’t really expect them to have a free-for-all forum. Well, kudos.”
But when I saw what it really was I said, “Wha…Shenanigans!”
“The Barn House” forum is kind of like the time I saw a Snickers bar during some period when they had decided to print “SATISFIES” on the side of the bar instead of “SNICKERS” but in the same typeface. It made me wonder if I was dreaming, or if someone had slipped me acid.
Which was it?
Agreed with most of the comments here. Sad attempt at advertising, and the very definition of vanity. I have no idea how a forum affects overall board performance (even if said forum never contains more than a handful of threads – which is my prediction), but it doesn’t seem worth it. At all.
Agreed entirely. This is the very definition of a general interest board; the addition of “The Barn House” is out of place. Start a blog, as other authors do.
Were I interested in reading the book, I would pass now. Pompous, vain, and almost self-aggrandizing. Especially considering the lengthy hemming and hawing over the Game Room.

Well said.

Yay! I’m not the only one who thought I was going insane. I did a triple take “wait… satisfies, did I just see that?”
[…] somebody posts great thoughts, to which others are invited to respond.
Isn’t that just a long-winded way of saying MPSIMS?
That’s always struck me as pompous.
Whereas making a new forum for discussing one book means you’re going to inherit the Earth tomorrow, you’re so meek?
This was a business decision, it seems to me. 's fine. Just say so. Say “We thought this would generate more ad hits for the site and more buzz for the book.” Win-win. Truth-truth.
So, a blog is pompous, but making a whole new forum on a board with 80,000 members about the book you wrote about fixing up your house is modesty in motion?
Hey! Before I got distracted with work, I was going to make this exact thread with that exact argument. Also this one:
I will admit when I saw “The Barn House” I thought to myself, “Self, (yes, I call myself ‘self’) I didn’t really expect them to have a free-for-all forum. Well, kudos.”
But when I saw what it really was I said, “Wha…Shenanigans!”
Oh, and this happened to me one time, too, though I know what acid feels like, so I’m pretty sure I wasn’t on it:

You people are all up in my head tonight. Get out, dammit!
Isn’t that just a long-winded way of saying MPSIMS?
Nobody has ever posted a great thought in MPSIMS.
Edit: Hey, somebody should start a thread in the new forum asking for recommendations on books that are like Ed’s book, but not Ed’s book. Pimp the competition right in his own little forum. Anyone who has the balls to do that would be my hero for the day.
Nobody has ever posted a great thought in MPSIMS.
Oh, OK. Guess that settles it. Thanks for letting me know.
Where should I go for them, then?
Another vote for pompous. Get that shit into it’s own little thread (that would probably sink like a stone) and be done with it.

Ed’s book.
