Rejoice all yee complainers, Ed’s private forum has been moved off to Side Conversationsand can easily be hid by clicking the double up arrows in the upper right corner of the blue bar.
Count me in with the “who cares” crowd. My prediction is that due to the comatose-inducing subject matter (how long can you discuss fixing up old homes? I’ve yet to see 1 memorable thread on the subject in my years of lurkerdom. Or maybe I did, but chose to drill my skull open to get rid of the memory) the forum turns out to be as popular as a bacon sandwich shop in Mecca, eventually becomes embarrassing and quietly gets shut down or merged with Café Society. The End.
Putting it squatting away at the bottom is a good move, though. Wonder if we’ll be getting any more sub-forums there?
Wonderful! I trust there’ll be no lasting hard feelings between Ed and us mealy-mouthed “complainers,” as we’re mostly reasonable people here.
Thank you, Barn Swallow.
Not even our beloved Cecil dare be THIS vain!
Seriously, WTF?!?
(Nobody’s dusted the place since I left, I see…)
I wouldn’t have minded The Barn House staying where it was if its scope had been expanded beyond fixer-uppers and not being able to stick to a budget. Might have been a good place for more outdoorsy things that don’t fit into any of the other fora very well. (Hunting, building and repairing things, maintaining large properties, etc.)
In fact, I would have liked it then.
But whatever.
Now that was funny: hats off. Nice work from **Ed[/B ]in actually listening to the members and working out a reasonable solution, too: I’m genuinely impressed that he listened and responded. TubaDiva, please take note: there are other options for addressing genuine complaints than just telling people to shut up and fuck off if they don’t like it.
I know I said I was done with The Scrivener but I have been chuckling all afternoon at his obliviousness. I have come to the conclusion that he must be “special” In a helmet and blue bus kind of way. How else can you explain the furious backpedaling and just plain stupidity?
Here is how I came to this conclusion. After a silly back and forth with Marley23 I finally had to point out to our “special poster” what Marley23 actually said. post 237
Now, did The Scrivener thank me? Hell no! he called me a quisling! post 244
I was shocked and dismayed I tell you! Me a Nazi collaborator! (but I was kinda impressed with the big words he was using) BUT, and this is where I should I started to figure thing out…
Post 248 I am a quisling not for disagreeing with The Scrivener, but for posting an uncritical thread in the Barn House forum!
What? What?
Also in Post 244 he stated he wanted to SHUN the Barn House forum. SWEET! Shut up already then! Let the shunning begin! When I linked to him the correct definition of SHUNNING, Mr Big Word The Scrivener flip flopped like a flounder.Post 264
This is when I shook my head and went outside to look after my critters and ponder on the silliness of this thread. It took me a while, but I have realized the only explanation for the sheer stupidity of The Scrivener must be because he is dim-witted.
So in closing, I apologize for yelling at you sir, and telling to to fuck off. Never let it be said that Farmerchick picks on the feeble-minded.
You’re a fucking idiot. Ed can send an electric charge from his computer to yours, frying you in an instant(hypoerbole). He doesn’t have to account to anyone to do this. Jenny, not so much.
Jenny has to ask permission to address member complaints politely and professionally? Huh.
Forum categories. See, I told youse guys it’s a great feature …
Absolutely,
Without permission (usually in writing) 867-5309 is only allowed to be rabid, impatient and shrill.
Kind of like Sarah Palin.
Hey, if you guys get to call her Jenny then I think I should be able to call her 867-5309. Just show me in the rules where I can’t.
I wouldn’t bet the ranch.
What the fuck does that mean, and how is that any kind of argument at all?
On there being no lasting hard feelings, or on Dopers being mostly reasonable?
yaaaaaaaaaaaaawn
TLDR.
I guess in The Scrivener’s world, other people care about a defunct magazine about 1980s New York.
Seconded.
Is there also some force which compels TubaDiva to tell people to fuck off, instead of just saying that? Is it
her gigantic ego, or her inability to handle the quantity of complaints that a job like this inevitably entails?
I won’t speak for her, but dealing with the complaining douchbags who think they own this place would make me less than sweetness and light.
I realise that Ed can pull changes that TubaDiva can’t off her own bat: however her reponse was to be instantly dismissive, telling people to “show some respect” when a better reponse might have been along the lines of “I don’t see what the big deal is myself, but I’ll pass the complaints along to Ed and see what he makes of them.” It’s that kind of “how dare you complain to your betters?” attitude to customer service that has earned her her rep for dismissiveness, and why so many members get their backs up so easily: because we, the people who make this place live and breathe, are not used to having our comments heard, and the default mode becomes one of querulous hostility. That’s exactly why what Ed did was such a welcome surprise, because it didn’t take months of simmering disgruntlement from members for him to not only acknowledge our complaints but act on them.
Talk about hypocrisy. Doesn’t the registration agreement state:
You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use the SDMB to post any material that you know or should know is false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, threatening, invasive of a person’s privacy, or violative of U.S. law. You agree not to post material that in our opinion fosters or promotes activity that is illegal in the U.S. We reserve the right to revoke the posting privileges of persons misrepresenting themselves on the SDMB.
How can that not be seen as an implied threat?
And of course there are the forum rules for The Pit: “Do not threaten harm or wish death upon another poster.” I believe that’s generally been interpreted to include hyperbole. Wonder if I should report that post?
