A worthy cause? Cancer research...

Erm, I don’t want to sound stupid, but where exactly does it say whether you’ve had any hits or not? Does it go under your general user stats when you get some, but not have a space before then, or is there some other place?

Unfortunately it’s the only thing the program doesn’t seem to track and include in your stats. It’s been mentioned on the UD’s “Suggestions” message board, but it doesn’t look like a fix is forthcoming.

At this time, the only way to know how many hits you’ve had with a particular protein is to look at the screen where the molecule is changing shapes. If you’ve had any hits, it will tell you in the top/right hand corner of that box (immediately to the left of where it says “Current Protein Target”. Here’s an example. However, if you don’t see it before the task is completed, you’ll never know how many hits that task had because once it’s done you can no longer access that screen. :frowning:

I finally got some! Lookie here!

Yeah, it doesn’t even come close to the numbers that the people in the above linked UD thread have gotten, but now I can laugh at Henry.

Thanks. Not I’m wondering whether I’ve ever gotten any. I’ve never paid much attention to the conformers and whatnot, so I doubt I would have noticed even if I’d seen it. Well, at least I know where to look now.

Shayna your enthusiasm is wonderful and enchanting. I guess I’d become a little blase’ about the small steps. Thanks for reminding me to “smell the roses” on the journey.

What a sweet thing to say, Abby. You’re welcome. I think this is very exciting and I’m thrilled to be able to participate in it.

My deepest condolences to you on the loss of your son. I can’t begin to imagine the grief one suffers at the loss of a child. My mother passed away from breast cancer, which was first diagnosed when she was only 2 years older than I am right now. Very scary stuff. It was a long (nearly a year from her terminal diagnosis), frightening and sad death for her.

I can’t imagine why, with the thousands of members we have registered here, we only have a measley 38 people on the Straight Dope team. Perhaps I should start a new thread and issue a challenge for people to join up or something.

I have one WU 98% complete with 1 hit on one computer, another at 88% and 1 hit on another computer, this computer at 53% and 1 hit and no idea what my one at home is doing at the moment. Without the stats from these included (since they obviously haven’t been uploaded and tallied yet), my current stats are:

Well, I dunno how many hits I’ve had previously, but I’ve got four now!! What’s funny it that it’s a tiny little WU, 75% through and it’s only been two hours. Most of mine last at least twenty hours. Okay, so it isn’t five hundred hits, or even five, but for two hours four ain’t bad.

Are you testing the new RAS Protein that they just released today, JadedNaive? My devices have been getting those all afternoon and they’re going really, really fast. The one I’m working on now is 10% done in 7 minutes. If it continues at that rate it’ll take barely over an hour to finish the entire WU. But I haven’t gotten any hits against this new protein, though, so if this is the one you’re testing and you’ve gotten 4, that’s great!

But also keep in mind that TPTB in this research project are just as interested in eliminating molecules that don’t work as they are in finding those that do.

P.S. Coldfire and I talked about trying to get the Straight Dope team participation up today and in an effort to do so, he submitted this thread to Tuba Diva for Threadspotting!

Nine hits on this work unit and it’s 78% complete.

<Waving my glorius scepter of research in Henry’s general direction.>

Kneel sir Henry, I shall knight thee, ‘Sir Pentahit’ for thy worthy [sub]but not divine[/sub] contribution.

Really excited this is catching on here,
Abby

Shayna, yeah, it’s the RAS protein. It’s actually taken 5 hours now, but it’s 98% done with 8 hits.

And while I suppose eliminating molecules that don’t work is important and all, it isn’t as fun as finding ones that do

ten hits against “Superoxide Dismutase” and i am 99% done after 31 hours of processing.

whoah.

the “superoxide dismutase” module just finished, and i got one of those newfangled “RAS protien” modules.
it is RACIN’! it has been running for 8 minutes and is 25 percent done! very small looking protien though. not much bigger than some of the endstage molecules from the superoxide i just did. good thing too- my computer was slowing down as that superoxide ate a great deal of memory.

I feel kind of inadequate almost, but: GUESS WHO GOT HIS FIRST HIT LAST NIGHT??

I can only run the software at home (work = FireWall from Hades), and my home computer is on from 20:00 until 2:00 or so. Not as much as all y’alls, but you do what you can, right?

Yeah, you always remember your first.

Sadly, I probably had my first when I wasn’t even paying attention… sniff

Alert!

Alert!

bump device engaged.

[sub]well, that and i need to turn on notification.[/sub]

Ahem. Today was a really good day!

And congrats, Coldy. You never know - yours could end up being the one!

Shayna, How do you take a picture and post it like that? (I want to play too.)

Abby

Hey, I probably had my first before I even knew what a hit was. Still, we can go by the first we remember. I’ve decided to just pretend I’ve been waiting this long and finally gotten a hit. More exciting and setisfying than if I’d seen my first and it was within ten minutes of signing up, if you ask me!

Hooray! We’re curing cancer!!

Hi Abby,

When you have the device open as the active window, just hold down the Alt key and press the Print Screen/Sys Rq button at the top of your keyboard. That’ll copy the image to your clipboard. Then you’ll need an image editing program (I use Micrografx Picture Publisher, but there are any number of them you can use).

I start with a New/Blank image of 756x514 and paste to that. It’s pretty big, so I reduce it to 90% in size, but that makes it a little blurry, so I sharpen it a bit then save it as a .jpg image. Then I upload it to my Geocities account, insert the image into a web page and link the page using the url code here. (You can no longer link directly to an image from Geocities.)

Good luck!
