Hey, my system isn’t the worst! It’s a 26. But then, my computer is only on about six hours a day, so the extra few points don’t do me much good. Still, I’m glad I’m not the only one here who isn’t using a top of the line computer system.
Coldfire, I your one hit leads to a little less pain, or a little more time, one more kiss or another sticky handful of mushed flowers from the weeds in the backyard, then it’s worth it and I am so grateful.
Fourteen hits today!
Shayna, thanks for your help. I managed to take a pic of the page although I haven’t figured out how to post it yet. But I have proof!

Disadvantage of this program as compared to SETI@home is that it only works on MS OS’s. Not to invite SPOOFE’s wrath or anything, but we have a large cluster of iMacs and G4s at work which I may have been able to convince my boss to use, and I have 2 PIIIs running Linux at home.
But, I will answer any questions about the proteins that are being chewed up by this program. After all, that’s what I try and do for a living. SOD and Ras are my cup o tea.
Have you seen Standford’s protein folding project? They have a Mac version you can download with theirs.
It’s unfortunate that the UD people have put THINK for the Mac platform on hold indefinitely. A lot of people are asking for it. Hopefully they’ll get around to it at some point. I know they’ve beta tested it, but they’ve put releasing it on hold to focus on the Windows version.
So what do you do with proteins for a living? That’s got to be so fascinating!
Studying to be a molecular geneticist and a physician. I work with fruit flies at the moment, which is not so far removed as it may seen. The ras signalling pathway is conserved in fruit fly eye development, and we have gained a lot of knowledge about carcinogenesis and signal transduction by studying the fruit fly eye. I am studying the fruit fly eye in order to learn about neurogenesis. As I am also pursuing an MD, I have a special interest in human genetics and cancer genetics. And since I worked for a month with one of the world leaders in ALS research (Lou Gehrig’s disease), I know all about SOD (superoxide dismutase is linked to familial forms of ALS).
The Stanford project looks worthwhile. I will probably download the console version for my Linux boxes. The Mac version is only for OS X right now – we are still running 9.2 at work because my boss is concerned with stability. We shall see. I suppose.
Another new member. Glad to help.
I’m kicking ass and taking names!!

My 1.7G processor and cable modem are NOT going to waste! Although my overall performance is only 95.
Hey edwino I work with proteins too. I’m working with BMP (bone metastasis protein).
I joined! Looks pretty cool.
Question… what do you all think of the “web services testing”?
I know this is how this is all funded… but sometimes my intenet connection is slow enough without another program taking up my bandwidth… even with cable. I have it disabled for now. I was wondering what you all thought about it though.
I’m among the slackers who didn’t sign up. I’m already enrolled in SETI@home, to whom I’ve given about 900 hours of CPU time. Worthy endeavors, both, but SETI is of more interest to me.
You’re welcome, Abby. Check your email - I sent you some instructions for uploading.
The team now has my 306 units. Use them well.
Okay, folks, a problem has arisen over here.
Yesterday morning, my computer was turned on and it was very, very slow. The CPU wasn’t going overdrive, but it reported 100% usage. I couldn’t access any websites, and everything I tried to use ran very slowly. So, I defragged and it all worked fine, until I restarted this morning, at which point I had the same problem. I tried defrag again, and despite having defragged the day prior, it was already severly fragmented again. I figured something was causing it all on startup, so I remembered what I’d installed recently, and the agent was the only thing I had. I also remembered that I’d had problems with their website locking up IE, and occasionally my entire system. I also noticed that, along with the slowdowns, the agent was desperatly trying to contact the UD server. So I defragged again, removed the agent from startup, and restarted. And the problem was totally solved.
I’m not sure what was happening, but apparantly it was the agent’s fault. Anyone had any similar problems? Should I report this to the company?
I haven’t experienced that, Mnementh, but I’d recommend checking out their Support FAQs and perusing this thread in their New Members forum. If you don’t find anything in either of those places, try searching all open forums to see if there are any threads anywhere else that discuss this problem. If you still can’t find a solution, I’d recommend posting an inquiry in their Member-To-Member Support forum (but I’d recommend telling them that you have, indeed, searched through all the above links I put here or they’ll lash you 30 times with a wet noodle :)). Good luck!
I joined up today. Doin’ my first moleculy thingy…16 hits, RAS Protein. Yay. Yah, yah, I don’t post much at all…I’m here though. Hee. 85% done with the silly RAS Protein. I wonder how many more hits it’d rack up between now and done-time.
Yo
Just picked up this thread. I’ve contrbuted 98 days & bits so far, having signed up to UD about 4 months ago. Good to see SDMB involved too!

I joined yesterday too. Don’t think I have any hits yet. Did tell some people about it and they are gonna join too.
Started on Friday, ran all weekend.
Processing RAS, 91% complete
2 days 15 hours 40 minutes
Woohoo - 9 hits!!
Thanks for joining, guys. This is great!
Last night, I scored 3 hits on a RAS proteine. I also once shot a RAS proteine in Reno, but that’s another story.
