Aaaaawwww ... kittens!

Gaaah! I just made that my wallpaper! Those two kitties look like two of mine.

Wow. Her eyes are incredible! I want her!

What a cool idea! We can set up an Adopted Kitten Railway. I can’t help you much for the American version, but I would totally be part of a Canadian one. Of course, you can only let people participate who wouldn’t bogart the kittens.

the first week he was pretty much hiding behind the second floor landing rocking chair (it’s an antique little nothing made of wood. not exactly choice hiding, there, but evidently sufficed for his needs) and indulging in much hissing. :stuck_out_tongue:

this week, things have returned to normal. when he isn’t playing with his new ‘toy,’ he’s back camped out at the sliding doors watching for that orange boy that lives nearby who DARES to come up on his patio!

my kitties aren’t sleeping or snuggling together, but they are getting along fine now. Turk isn’t the most affectionate beast, but Speck is, so it works out well.

Beaucarnea, who are you? You gotta post more! This is terrific stuff.

Talking about me, are you? Bogart, me? I only have 8 - four of them I bottle raised, one is a former vet clinic cat who was injured in the line of duty, two were rescues and my husband bought me my Siamese for Valentine’s Day.

Awww! Kittens!!

Awwwwwzums!!! Those are some of the cutest kitten pictures EVER!

Featherlou, let’s do it. Count me in for the kitten relay 200 miles in any direction. (I’m on the Virginia/Tennessee/North Carolina border, if anyone is Jonesing for a kitten.)

So glad that Speck is settling in well, Scubaqueen. He looks very attentive in all your pics- he will be a great buddy.

Hi, a35362. Who am I? I’ve spent the last 9 vacation days tickling kittens, wandering about outdoors and accomplishing: absolutely nothing. Clearly I am the most aimless Doper present. But I have seen some really cool stuff in the past two weeks. I’ve got some cloudy through-the-window pics of the wildlife to post- but I’ll start another thread for those. There are pictures of snakes and bugs and gay turkeys and interspecies bird relations- and a kitten thread is no place for anything oogy.

Hiya, Sunspace!

Hi, Beaucarnea! How’zit goin’, eh?

Speck may be the cutest kitten I have ever seen.

You realise, of course, that every kitten thread I see here is nudging me closer and closer to actually getting a cat in real life?

One of us. One of us. One of us.

I’m sorry, but I’m not seeing a downside here.

(We are the CatPeople. You will be assimilated.)

Hee. I’m sure I would get used to the allergies. How can I assure that I get a cat who actually wants to hang out and be petted when I want to pet it?

You don’t. Which, I think, is why some people prefer dogs - they’re kind of obsequious and are overweeningly grateful whenever you deign to look at them. Cats sometimes don’t want to be bothered. Many of them stick to you like glue, but there are others that want pets certain ways and certain times. You can’t foist your will on a cat. The person to whom I was marrried insisted on picking up the boy cat and cuddling him when boy cat didn’t want it. Boy cat was wilful. Unfortunately, so was person to whom I was married. As a result, boy cat developed a hate for PTWIWM and hissed whenever PTWIWM approached. Me, I let boy cat come to me for pets when he wanted to (which actually was fairly often) and he became devoted to me and was my baby boy until he passed a couple years ago.

Moral of the story - if you must assert your will over your beasties, don’t get a cat. Get something with less will of its own.

Gray kitten found a great home today. A young single mom brought her 5 year old boy to look at the kittens- he picked up the gray one and the kitten started purring and nuzzling his face. Kitten allowed him to hold her for nearly 10 minutes before she jumped down. Mom seemed to prefer the black one and wasn’t thrilled with her little boy’s choice, and was clearly hesitant. Little pink-cheeked boy could sense Mom’s reluctance, and he got a desperate look on his face, picked gray back up, slung her over his shoulder, dug into his jeans and tried to hand me 50 cents. “Here, it’s all I have, but you take it. Just take it. I wanna keep her.”

He walked to the car mumbling about names while carrying the still purring gray kitten slung over his shoulder.

My heart is so big right now I’m surprised you all can’t hear it beating.

Damn that was sweet.

I always pick up my cat even though she hates it. I am asserting my dominance over her. (Yeah, right.) She’s a very tolerant cat, though. Any other cat might start hating me, but she’s a big wimp. Cats won’t always be up for pettings and hugs, but they stick with their human, even if it’s just to be in the same room. My husband’s cat is like his shadow; wherever he goes, she goes too.

Beaucarnea, there’s not much you can do when a cat picks you.

The fuzzy black land shark is currently curled up asleep in the overstuffed chair in the corner of my office. Not because he particularly likes that chair, but because this is the room I’m in right now. If I were to move to, say, the dining room, he’d get up and move to that room within half an hour. Very cute.
Much cuter than biting me awake in the middle of the night when he’s hungry.

Volunteer to foster for a local rescue group and be up front about the fact that you want to adopt eventually. It’ll give yo a chance to see if you really want a new cat overlord and let you find one that’s a perfect fit.

When I’m sitting on my couch, my cat will come and sit and look at me with her wide eyes (she has eyes like the kids on those velvet paintings - just giant!), like why aren’t you petting me? You’re home - you must pay attention to me!

My parents’ dog will herd people back to the room. If there is a group of people and one leaves, he will go look for them, and stay with them until they come back to the room.

tbdi’s suggestion was good, but here’s another. By the time a kitten is ready for adoption, the kitten’s personality is pretty well established. My step-sister’s cat’s litter, for example, was very clear in their behaviors. She already knew that the cat I chose was a snuggler, because if you picked him up and petted him, he’d curl up in your arms and sometimes go to sleep. The rest would all struggle to get away after just a minute or two.
