Here in San Antonio, we’re expecting anything from 3 inches to Harvegeddon, so anything goes. All of our outside stuff is in the garage, so whatever starts blowing around won’t be our stuff. Worried about the fence, roof, swimming pool. Already have chemicals for pool treatment afterward and I was thinking about taking some of the panels off the fence.
It’s our anniversary this weekend, so this is our hurricanniversary. I went out late last night and bought assorted mini cakes for each of us so we can celebrate, and we’ve used this necessity (of having to move a lot of stuff) into an opportunity to clean our home, too. Linens are washed, floors vacuumed, dusted… we may get a tree through our roof Sunday morning, but at least it won’t be destroying a messy home!
I’m in a relatively higher elevated area - for my street, I am uphill by about 40+ feet from the bottom - but might have to deal with localized areas of flooding.
Damned thing is now a category 3. SA government is definitely taking this seriously - I’ve been to a couple of meetings in the past couple of days, but really the best thing we can do is prepare to be at home for 3-6 straight days.
Some tracks have Harvey swinging back into the Gulf and heading straight for Houston after restrengthening a bit. Having the eye of a Cat 1 pass directly overhead doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility.
I have never seen a hurricane predicted path like this one. Harvey will likely dissipate while hanging around over the Texas coast for the next 5 days!
TX Senators who voted against aid for Hurricane Sandy ask for fed assistance ahead of Harvey
GOP Texas Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz pressed President Trump in a letter on Friday to grant Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) request for a major disaster declaration for the state as Hurricane Harvey barrels toward it.
“Given the potential catastrophic impact that the Hurricane may have on Texas communities, we strongly support this request and urge you to provide any and all emergency protective measures available by a major disaster declaration,” the senators said.
…
The pair voted against a disaster relief package after Hurricane Sandy slammed the U.S. in 2013, causing severe damage to the region.
Cruz said at the time he voted against the package because it was filled with spending that was unrelated to storm relief.
“Emergency relief for the families who are suffering from this natural disaster should not be used as a Christmas tree for billions in unrelated spending, including projects such as Smithsonian repairs, upgrades to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration airplanes, and more funding for Head Start,” he said.

Border Patrol won’t close checkpoints for Harvey, claims they’ll still “prioritize public safety”
“The Border Patrol is a law enforcement agency and we will not abandon our law enforcement duties.”
When asked to elaborate on the statement, CBP public affairs officer Roberto Rodriguez said officers would prioritize public safety but keep intact the goals of the agency’s mission.
“We’re not going to impede anybody getting out of here, but at the same time we’re a law enforcement agency, so we still have to conduct our duties,” he said.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas quickly admonished the agency for putting policy ahead of safety.
“Safety should be a priority regardless of immigration status,” said ACLU policy strategist Astrid Dominguez. “This is very concerning for the community. It sends a wrong message.”
Just as the “sanctuary cities” Trump derides prioritize public safety by letting immigrants and their loved ones report crimes without fear of ICE, standing down from the checkpoints while cities may have to evacuate saves people being too afraid to get to safety. It’s a terrible precedent. Let’s hope that tragedy doesn’t ensue.
So if you “look like a Mescan” you better not try to evacuate.
To be fair, trying to load up Hurricane Sandy relief with pork-barrel spending was pretty despicable, and there’s no sign (so far) of pork stuff being squeezed into Harvey relief.
I probably have. And they were made in response to even worse statements made to me, but nobody seems to care about that. Anyway, that’s beside the point.
I have my fingers crossed. Harvey has spun up to a major league storm. It looks like it will come onshore between Corpus Christi and Port O’Connor, and that puts Houston squarely in the sweet spot of the major feed bands. The problem is that Harvey is going to sit for a while and drop a massive amount of water on us, much like Tropical Storm Allison did back in 2001. Not gonna be fun.
11 years and 10 months since the last major hurricane made landfall in the USA … an all time record time between major hurricane landfalls … perhaps an indication that these types of powerful events are becoming rarer? …
I guess I should take a swipe at the OP … I hope all the clothes you keep in that hump mildews …
I called both of my Senators as well as my congressman today urging no federal money be sent to Texas for this hurricane. Karma is a bitch. Texas chose to elect Ted Cruz and John Cornyn who voted against relief after Hurricane Sandy. They can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps after the storm. Maybe George W Bush can call upon, “heck of a job Brownie.”
I lived in Dallas from late 2004-2008. At this point, I don’t even want to set foot inside a red state. I don’t wish ill on anyone but I don’t want my tax dollars going to bail out such hypocrites.
