Hurricane Harvey Check In Thread

Looks like a big 'un is getting ready to hit Texas.

For those of you not in the path, you may want to fill up your gas tank as soon as you can. Gulf oil rigs are being evacuated which means gas prices will be going up.

For those of you in the path, let us know how you’re doing. I’m not in the path but as a resident of Orlando(ish) I’m no stranger to these storms. Stay safe!

Located just north of Houston. On relatively high ground and fully stocked for 5 days without power or water (although lost power only when Ike came through in 2008). Will ride it out.

We went through the four Florida hurricanes in 2004. With Charley we lost power for about 18 hours. We had it lucky…co-workers lost power for more than a week.

My sister and her family live just east of Corpus Christi on the coast. They loaded the car and headed north to her husband’s parents this afternoon. At this point I’m more worried about their house given how this sucker looks like it will be dropping a LOT of rain over the next few days. 24-40 inches of rain over 3-4 days won’t be a good thing for any one. Practically nobody is high enough for that to not be a major problem.

I also have relatives in the Houston and Brenham areas but it looks like they won’t be getting the brunt of this, at least right now.

I just moved away from Victoria last month, but have friends in Port O’Connor and Port Lavaca. Victoria is too far inland to be affected by a storm surge from the gulf so I would not expect anything worse than heavy rain, howling winds, maybe some street flooding or power outages.

The governor has ordered mandatory evacuations…Mustang Island is bugging out.

Not to be alarmist… but the hurricane is scheduled to *hit on the 26th *!

My SO’s parents (and their dog) should be arriving at our house from Rockport within the hour. Rockport is in the bull’s-eye for landfall, so they boarded up yesterday and are heading here for an extended hurricane party. We are only about 1.5 miles from Galveston Bay, but that only looks crazy on paper - we will be high and dry. Our house is about 20’ higher than the neighborhood boat ramp and didn’t even come close to flooding during the more extreme tidal surge from Ike.

Good luck everyone. Anyone know how Brownsville is situated? My MiL’s house is there, and she is here visiting. Do we need to round up friends to do a little storm proofing?

Brownsville should be fine. The Valley is on the “clean” side of Harvey, so should get no TS strength wind and probably not much rain.

Thank you.

Good luck and be safe anyone in the path of the storm.

Houston here. Gonny be a gully washer for the next few days. We’re all set for food, water, propane, and gas for the generator. Stay safe, Texans!

Most recent National Hurricane Center, Miami, FL, discussion (400 PM CDT Fri Aug 25 2017) states that a stalled “Harvey could maintain tropical storm strength for the entire 5-day forecast period due to its proximity to the northwestern Gulf of Mexico.” North Carolina’s experience with Floyd showed how much damage the rains from a stalled storm can cause.

Here in San Antonio we have no idea if we’re in the path of anything more than a fukton* of rain, but we’re prepared with all the proper emergency-oriented hoarded supplies: batteries, night lights, cans of food, even a full tank of gas to take us to nowhere, as we have nowhere to go.

I’m in Dickinson, between Houston and Galveston. Been through several major storms before; got food, water, and a brand-new generator with plenty of gas. Hopefully boredom will be the biggest problem I have to face, & my unread stack of books should help in that regard. Stay safe, y’all!

Austin here. Going to get some more food and gasoline after I get off of work. We had a torrent of rain about half an hour ago, but turns out that was just a false alarm, a foretaste of things to come.

Houston here. Fourth floor in an apartment building; my street will likely flood but I’ll be dry. Sitting on a big pile of food and water!

My people in Victoria that I’ve heard from have evacuated. Even though there is no risk of storm surge, there could be 30 or so inches of rain, with nowhere for it to go.

Corpus Christi here. Battened down the hatches at home yesterday and left for Laredo this morning. Currently sitting in a hotel room hoping my friends and family that are sticking it out are going to be safe and trying not to think about what sort of state my house is going to be in after all this.
