Abandoned film series

George Lucas claims to have planned Star Wars as a trilogy of trilogies (hence the first-produced film being retroactively titled Episode IV). However, he has since decided against producing Episodes I through III.

Dontcha mean VII-VIII-IX? Or am I being whooshed here?

The Planet of the Apes remake kind of hinted at a sequel (Marky Mark on the run on an ape-infested alternate Earth), but nothing came of it.

Would you make a sequel of something that bad?

I thought that was a reference to Taylor finding the Statue of Liberty at the end, not a sequel set up. I’m still mad over that film, the original had Charleton Heston in a loincloth or nude most of the time, yet in the remake Marky Mark didn’t even take his shirt off  .

Pushkin, Emmerich’s outlines for Stargate II & III were made into novels after the series came out. Oddly Hathor still shows up.

Seriously Cal? That’s a whoosh and not just a failed joke on your part?

I’m hoping I’m wrong, but I fear that the Firefly/Serenity franchise won’t have another outing.

Me too (well, not all the books, but I would like to see a couple more high quality movie versions of the series).

I have heard that all the cast members except Crowe are contracted for two sequels. So maybe when his career starts to cool off we might see this happen. But as the years go by it seems less and less likely.

I’m still looking for the first five parts of the ‘Leonard’ series.

And while we’re at it, where’s Spaceballs II; The Search for More Money!, the whole Spaceballs franchise had promise, plenty of scifi genres and memes to rip on, and just think of the moichandizing possibilities!

You asked for it. Even if you didn’t here it is anyway.

There is some talk of the Incredibles Sequel for the 2012 time frame. Brad Bird is open to the idea and Disney would like a sequel. The hick-up is timing and Brad Bird is stilling working up the story ideas.

Meanwhile Toy Story 3, the second theatrical sequel, is scheduled for a 2010 release.

This one needs to be successful or they don’t need to worry about the next 5 books. I am hoping for the best. I really enjoyed the first movie.

I would really doubt it. Serenity did not make money on the theatrical release and only recovered the cost of making and promoting on DVD sales.

There are of course rumors of a budget minded sequel made for TV and hoping to cash in on DVD sales

Jim

Loach: Curse thee, you foul creature, I had managed to forget how truly pathetic and horrible that special was. Who would have thought that you were in league with Sharky.

Jim

My non-failed joke whooshed him.
What did you think I meant?

Amen!

I know right where the boat is, too. Been on it twice. But will they use it again? Will they spend another $125 million or more? Did the movie make back all that money and then some? Or is there more to it than that?

Thank goodness! I’d heard some ugly rumors to the contrary …

(But admit it: wouldn’t it be kind of cool to see Episodes VII - IX, with Hamill, Fisher, and Ford reprising their early roles? Ain’t gonna happen, though …)

Put me down for a serving of “Master and Commander II” too.

And a side order of “Sky Captain II” as well.

I’m dreaming, am I not?

This reminds me: When will Mel Brooks make History of the World: Part 2??? Go ahead, make fun of the Civil War, the Great Depression, Freud, Hitler!!!

Jews in Space!

No, no, he DID make episodes I-III, and they were GREAT! You musta been watching with fanboy scales over your eyes. They’ll cloud your judgement every time.

Glad to help your memory there, guys – all three movies exist in glorious reality!

I don’t think we’ll be seeing the next installment of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which is simultaneously disappointing and a great relief. I think the only way they could have made a worthwhile H2G2 movie was to do it Peter Jackson LOTR style. Huge budget, long run time. Not likely to ever happen.
