Question: does anyone on this board believe him or herself to have been abducted by aliens? I’m dead serious. I’ve been reading a lot of literature on the subject lately, including the proceedings from a semi-famous conference at MIT from few years back. Held by a committee of doctors and authors and whatnot, these apparently intellegent, level-headed men and women examined the issue with enough clinical precision and sobriety to almost render it boring. The consensus seemed to be that if these occurrences weren’t actual corporeal events capable of being witnessed by neutral third parties, they at least represented a deeply-seated psychological fantasy motif that may exist hidden within us all and only rises to the consciousness of a few. Either way, the ramifications are worthy of attention.
I suppose if you’re embarrassed (because I’m sure the majority of replies to this post will be of a humorous bent), you could always e-mail me. I’m just very curious to communicate with someone who genuinely believes that he or she has experienced this fascinating phenomena.
I think the ramifications are worthy of attention only if these abductions are real, not “either way”, as you suggest. For all I know, there may be all kinds of “fantasy motifs.” For example, I hear a voice in my head asking why this thread is not in GD. Is that a “fantasy motif?” Of course it is.
And, since this commitee of doctors, authors and whatnot did not specifically state that there is incontravertible evidence for these abductions, just what is it that you find so fascinating?
Holy cow. Is this some sort of test? Be a close-minded nimrod, oversimplify a complex issue you obviously know little to nothing about, and see how the new guy reacts?
First of all, responding to the voice in your head, the reason this was not in GD is because, at its basest form, it was a “hey, have you ever had this thing happen to you before?” question, not a debate, per se. I figured that if a debate should arise, it would promptly be shuttled off to the hallowed halls of GD by one of our intrepid moderators.
Secondly, you hearing a voice in your head is not what I mean by a “fantasy motif.” In fact, I blame myself, because that perhaps remains a nebulous term.
If, say, you heard a voice every day at four p.m. telling you that “The Cubs will win the World Series in 2012,” and, just by chance, you happened to meet someone else who has the exact same thing happen to him or her, at the exact same time every day, with the same earthshaking message, you’d probably have a more difficult time dismissing it as your very own personal delusion. What if you and your new friend discovered that there exist hundreds of people throughout the world who hear the exact same message at the exact same time each afternoon, some of whom have never even heard of the Chicago Cubs, 99% of whom have never met one another. What does this represent?
The scenario in question, one in which diminutive intruders invade one’s personal space, kidnap the victim, and disappear him or her to a place of light, spans eons. Of course, the abduction experience used to involve fairies and such before the possibility of space travel permeated public consciousness. I think this screams volumes about the claims. The accounts, including today’s “alien abductions,” are recounted as occuring in a rigorous, almost mundane, order of events (taken from bed or car, no memory of entering, examination on table, tour of ship, no memory of return, blah blah) in lieu of the acccessorization and exaggeration for which extraterrestrial encounters practically beg. The fact that typically sane people with no contact between themselves have been reporting essentially carbon-copied reports of unexplained events in their lives since time immemorial makes today’s situation interesting to me (a related topic would be those “ritual satanic abuse” cases that were baffling social workers and psychologists for a few years back in the mid 90s…another case of mysterious, almost ethereal kidnappers, violations, etc.).
I don’t think the meeting was held to compile evidence and settle the issue once and for all. I believe it was a brainstorming, “where do we go from here?” sort of thing held for the sake of clinical psychologists who handle an increasing number of abduction cases (in the aftermath of what the abductee wholeheartedly believes to be a reality-level occurrence involving forcible kidnapping and, in some cases, intrusive physiological testing, post-traumatic stress disorder is the norm), ufologists, and the abducted, themselves.
Besides, even if they had been looking for “incontravertible (sic) evidence,” they would have almost certainly come up empty-handed. Think about it…if this theme of abduction exists only in the mind, the only evidence of its existence is soft, probably too soft to ever placate the skeptics. Any hard, empirical evidence, such as, oh, I don’t know, an alien’s surreptitiously acquired corpse, an actual alien implant, etc., has yet to come to light. That doesn’t mean the whole thing isn’t worth science’s time.
Well, this is a true story, make of it what you will:
About a year and a half ago, I had a dream where I was abducted by aliens. I was in a big circular white room, and there were two human-like aliens there, a male and a female. They were very nice, I don’t know exactly what they were doing, but one of the things they told me was, “You will remember all of this, but you will think it it was all just a dream”. The following day I caught a cold, and I’ve had sinus trouble ever since.
Now, do I think I really was abducted by aliens? No, just a coincidence, in my opinion. But if a doctor ever tells me, “Mr. Cabbage, we found this piece of metal implanted in your sinus cavity,” I’ll be sure to let you know.
At least you’re honest. I mean, you didn’t respond to anything I wrote, but…whatever…I suppose that’s just part of your problem, the one to which you admitted, and, as we all know, that’s the first step.
Oh, and thanks, Cabbage. You’re right, it probably was just a dream, but nevertheless, it was pretty cool hearing you tell the tale. Hey, when you woke up the next day, did you notice any of sperm missing?
Okay, I admit I’m not very educated about alien abductions.
So, I have a question:
When will the aliens finally abduct a person with some brains? Say, oh, a physicist. Or maybe a geneticist.
Why must it always be a gap toothed trailer trash redneck?
And why don’t they leave our cows and crops alone? Making those circles is a major piss off, and I hate it when they mutilate Bessy. And I don’t even want to get into those implants. Where do they get off with that stuff, anyway?
Don’t they know we can infiltrate their mother ship with a laptop running Windows95?
Of course, if this fascinating phenomena is a fantasy motif, then we can take the Men in Black off the case and put them to work on the Loch Ness monster.
Wally, DB, I’m gonna ask both of you to drop the name calling. It’s inappropiate in this forum. If you wish to hurl invective, try the BBQ pit. Although, calling someone a mighty hunter isn’t really much of an insult, I guess.
I’m also keeping this thread in MPSIMS for the moment. I see the OP as a request for personal stories/experiences, not an attempt to debate the validity of those stories.
What’s with calling them the Higher Intelligence if all these ET’s can find to carry out investigations and implantations and impregnations on girls named Becky Sue from Tornado Meadows Trailer Park.
I mean, what are the odds, for the entire space of the planet that these little green men find trailer parks so luring? Can’t they just blow NYC to pieces like in all the movies?
I’m not saying aliens don’t exist, I’m just really curious on why beings from outerspace are so fascinated with people who inhabit double-wides.
Now my question to hijack this thread is: Do alien abduction stories ever come out of other ( read: not as developed) countries, the jungles or the desert or the steppes or whatever. What about the godless chinese, do they ever have alien abduction stories or is this another spectacular example of brainless weenies in our country, yet again.
Anyone here subscribe to the Weekly World News edition of Kula Lumpur?
Amy, you sure are a quick learner. Let’s just say your dad and I have a mutual… shall we say, aquaintance? This particular fellow seems to be a big believer. And he’s a poster on these boards. Ask Wally, he’ll know who I’m referring to.
there is a huge phenomenom of seeing alien crafts in China. hundreds and hundreds of people on a freeway in China have been reported to have seen alien aircraft and pulled their cars over to look. i think the probabilty of these seen UFO’s are too worldwide to be mistaken as nothing. THey have gotten interviews from peeps all over the world, most who don’t know the ‘stereotype’ still report similar occurances happening to them as well.
