Let’s keep all this in its proper perspective: Abortion, like gay marriage, is one of those controversial things that shouldn’t even be controversial. Sometimes RWs have some good or at least challenging arguments on economic issues. But on social issues – there’s no merit at all to the anti-abortion/anti-gay-marriage side. It’s like arguing with flat-Earthers.
There should also be little controversy on the status quo of abortion laws, if people were aware of the facts about how few late-term abortions are actually performed and for what reasons. Because if there were more late-term abortions performed in more questionable circumstances, then whatever your stance on the topic, the question of when you should give a collection of cells rights when there is very little difference between them except location is hardly a trivial question.
Except of course the vast, vast majority of abortions are either done before the embryo/fetus has even a chance of being conscious, or done for genuine medical needs. The ones that don’t fall under these criteria amount to literally a handful a year. The rest of abortions (i.e. the overwhelming majority) should be completely uncontroversial.
I think you’ve done it BG. After all the threads we’ve had on the subject, the completely novel approach you have taken, to simply declare the other side wrong, has finally made the case. It’s brilliant. I don’t know why anyone hasn’t thought of doing this before. Just declare yourself correct. Oh, and throw in an insult, to boot. Insults are always persuasive. Especially when you put a little roll-eye emoticon after them!
It’s one of the larger culture shocks when moving from Canada to the US, and I think reflects the very different approach to religion the two countries have.
For what ever reason, people have chosen to have those concepts define them, and as a result must continue beyond all reason. And what’s really the most frustrating thing is that people let their traditional beliefs get in the way of their stated goals.
If you are really against abortion, and don’t want it to happen, making it illegal is quite possibly the least effective method imaginable. I have all the respect in the world for people that object to the moral concept of abortion. But if you want the rate of abortion to go down, it doesn’t take much imagination to come up with real strategies to make that happen. Except that those strategies mean teaching young girls about self confidence and birth control.
SSM falls into the same conundrum. Having two loving parents that are committed to each other and go out of their way to have a child should be the benchmark for marriage. Instead, marriage is forced on couples with an unwanted pregnancy that relates back to the previous issue. While at the same time denied to same sex couples.
I’ve always wondered what a US election would be like if those two issues were off the table. My guess is that they’d finally have some reasonable candidates.
People have pointed it out before, of course. The Right however is composed of liars, fools, fanatics and predators who simply don’t care about facts or logic. They are the moral and intellectual cesspool of America. That’s why we have so many controversies that simply shouldn’t exist in a sane country.
And no amount of apologetics for the Right about how “both sides are just as bad” will make it true.
None. It’s all about bigotry towards homosexuals and the hatred of women. They are about nothing but malice.
No, it goes a lot further than that. On social issues, RWs are not only always wrong, they are always completely, fundamentally, indefensibly wrong. Like, Nate-the-Neoconservative wrong.
The anti-abortion movement consistently acts in ways that hurt women and shows a complete disdain for the welfare of the children they claim to be so concerned about; plus its membership heavily overlaps with organizations that have a long history of misogyny.
And the anti-gay marriage side has consistently failed to even come up with a plausible lie about why SSM should be illegal. There is no reason for SSM to be illegal, except pure unadulterated bigotry. That’s all that opposition to SSM is about.
It’s a “point out the elephant in the living room” thread. The malice, bigotry and sheer incompatibility with reality of the Right is blindingly obvious and well known - but taboo to admit to. We are supposed to bend over backwards and pretend that they are well meaning people and that their demented claims deserve to be taken seriously; no matter how detached from reality they become, no matter how nasty, bigoted or outright violent they are.
Sorry if it sounds that way, I’m just sick of engaging with social conservatives like they deserve to be taken seriously as adults, which they don’t. Flat-Earthers, all. More importantly, I resent the demands all this imposes on public time and attention. Every hour politicians spend wrestling with these brainfart nonissues is an hour they could spend on something really important and urgent.
