FWIW, a few years ago, I started a pit thread titled Delay: “Judges shouldn’t use the Internet–that’s outrageous!”. In my first post, I linked to the article, and posted the quote that the thread title was paraphrasing. Because I used quote marks in the thread title, TVeblen put on her mod hat and told me not to do that again. I respectfully disagreed with her assessment of my OP’s title, but agreed I wouldn’t use quote marks in thread titles when I was paraphrasing again. Tveblen noted later that, given previous troubles with december’s use of misleading thread titles, they wanted to make sure it didn’t happen even inadvertantly.
I do suspect that euthanasiast would’ve gotten a better response if he’d argued civilly, rather than using “go fuck yourself.” I think this suspension is bogus, and I think that the rule has not been consistently enforced (or adequately explained) over the messageboar’s life, and I think that they ought to make a specific note of both the “misleading thread title” rule and the “don’t cuss out a mod” rule if they want them to be followed. But there is precedent for Lynn’s action.

Not to be rude, but I’ve said this explicitly several times above. Let me reiterate one more time.
If you create a forum where it is allowed, even customary, for people to swear at each other, then obviously normal social rules do not apply. That is the only reason I feel this rule needs to be spelled out explicitly. If you’re going to let people be horrendously rude, then no, it isn’t obvious which instances of horrendous rudeness are unacceptable.
Those of you who are comparing this to “real life” situations are apparently totally missing this point. In real life, most of the posts in the Pit would be totally unacceptable.
